How much is a 300tdi worth?
In the near future I'm switching out my 300tdi engine to a 24g 3.5 v8. How much would the engine, R380 gearbox, radiator, intercooler and engine ancillaries be worth all together? The engine has done 230,000 miles but still returns 28 miles per gallon. I had the cambelt replaced recently and have had it serviced regularly. So what's it worth? 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

I'm liking the sound of these prices, I thought it would be worth less due to the high mileage. 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

A 300Tdi engine is not worth a great deal as there are still a fair few about in rotten Discoveries. And it's not like the 200 where the Defender version commands a significant premium as with the 300 they are far more alike. A Defender R380 is worth a fair bit compared to a Disco one, again because of the plentiful supply of the latter.

Mileage doesn't have a huge impact, it's pretty rare to find a Tdi of either flavour with less than 100-150k on the clock anyway and they are well known for doing 300-400k plus between rebuilds if looked after. A really low mileage one could command a bit of a premium I suppose. As long as it's in good nick the price should be about right.

An engine that can be seen running and ideally driven in the vehicle will get you a better price in theory compared to one sitting on the workshop floor.

Thanks for the advice retro, it's still in and running strong so that's good. Is there any demand for the whole lot (engine, gearbox, etc) or would it be better to sell the whole lot separately? 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

There would be I'd have thought, plenty of people still upgrading earlier 90/110 vehicles and a package like that would be ideal for such a project.

If one of your 300tdi engines had 230,000 miles on it would it get you the lower end of that price range? I'm assuming that's without any gearbox, transfer box, etc? 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

I contemplated doing the same as you with my wife's 300 Tdi (which has less than 1ook on the clock believe it or not). After some discussions with the good folk on here and also our mechanic who'll be doing the job for us we've decided to switch out the transfer box for a Discovery one and upgrade the turbo to an Allisport VNT one with new intercooler etc and go for better performance that way. The V8 would have been nice but we like the reliability of the Tdi.
