Yes, you can drill a hole in the toughened glass. I did it to my first car, an old Lada I had back in the early 90s. Use a masonry bit and take it slowly (obviously not on hammer setting!). I suggest you wear safety goggles because about 10s after I finished the hole, while stood back admiring my handiwork some barsteward that must have been watching me work shot the glass. It exploded into a million fragments and if I had got any of that in my eyes it would have been nasty!

The bit on the glass? My white plastic clips looked fine but would not hold the edge of the glass new clips fixed it

Ignore the below which was based on me having drilled a nice pair of holes in a 12mm glass fishtank,
HOWEVER :drilling toughened/tempered glass requires a dustpan and brush in addition to a drill 
If you're going to do it buy a glass drill, one for glass not one made of glass
Don't go mad on the pressure let the drill do the work and keep it lubricated, if you're doing it outside lay the glass flat and trickle water over the cutting area, hose pipe will do, and be extra cautious at the end when you're about to go through in regards to the pressure/angle you have the drill bit. As with most things like this where you wont have a spare easily to hand its more stressful than difficult. A simple hole like this has to be easier than a 40mm hole cutter :-/ EDIT : havent used those bits that look like an arrow marketed as tile and glass, only the type that are more of a burr and diamond coated. Swac3, I was only joking. You can't drill toughened glass, as I found out all those years ago. The amazing thing is I actually achieved my aim, if only momentarily. I can still remember it now, it was a hot day, I finished the hole, stood back and took a swig from a glass of coke and then, BANG! The glass exploded.

+1 this.. glue is prolly more than sufficient despite my previous drilling post
would have been a bit difficult to glue a 40mm hole into the 12mm glass that I did, but for your windows... glue. 3 Landrovers |

just tried this and only lasted for about a week,will get new clips and take to an outo glass outlett and see if they can sort it out atb paul |

I stuck some clips onto my new Windows 6ish months ago and mines still fine. Was the area completely clean and slightly scuffed? Ray
