Hi guys,
after I've noticed a squeaking sound from the front axle in right corners while driving at a certain speed (between 10-20 km/h or even faster mostly while rolling only - gear engaged, but no throttle...) I've decided to check the wheel bearings on the front axle today. Not being a mechanic I've tried my best and wobbled the wheel. I was not able to detect any play in the wheel bearings, but after jacking up the right hand wheel, I've noticed a big dab of oil underneath the CV joint (please correct me if this part is called differently in English...in German we use to say "Homokineten"). Does this "oil leak" idicate any problem with the CV joint or is anything like that completely normal? Before driving to the mechanic once again for a problem which exists only in my mind, I would like to verify that this is really something to worry about...

Hi Thor its just the swivell seal leaking. Can be replaced in two ways, 1st way is a ball ach and can take ages and involves taking the whole hub assembly off. Lots ov very tight bolts and the assembly weighs a lot. Or do the easymethod and carefully split the seal and rejoin it using a quality rtv sealer. This method can be done in less than an hour. You will probably find links to "how to" on the net.

To check the wheel bearings you really need to jack the wheel off the ground, support the axle with a suitable stand, then grasp the wheel at the 12 and 6 o'clock position and then try and rock the wheel back an forth.
Your swivel leak is very, very common. If the ball itself is in good condition I would clean the area to make sure the brakes do not become contaminated and then monitor the situation. Steve. As I've got another 2 years of guarantee on it (got it new about a year ago) I'm going to have it checked by my local LR dealer. Let's hope they're not too lazy to replace it. @Miserableolgit: I've checked the wheel bearing exactly that way, but couldn't find any play in it. Do you think the squeaking could be possibly related to the leaking swivel seal? |

Noises are difficult to pinpoint, unless the swivel housing has leaked all its contents [which I doubt] I don't think it's likey to be CV related, instead it could be propshaft related but from this distance it's just guesswork and conjecture. Get it in to the dealer to be sure

Good news!? I've been at my dealer today to check the swivel seals once again and they proposed to change BOTH seals, left and right. Unfortunately not too quickly as their Defender expert is sick for another week or two. But they said driving this way is nothing too serious. (I've cleaned the swivel last week to check how much grease it is actually losing and it remained pretty much dry after 5 days

Just because its dry doesn't mean its not leaking as it may well be empty!

 with "dry" I meant the parts where all the grease was leaking to. The swivel itself is still nicely lubricated. |

Not a problem
I recall a tale of a chap who was always boasting about how he had got the only land rover with no gearbox leaks - till the day it seized due to the fact it had leaked all the oil out and had stopped leaking! I'm sure it will be ok though! Cv grease is fairly sticky stuff and hangs around inside for ages!
