IIRC it's rivnuts in the crossmember and they can be a right pain.
Sometimes using a bit of downward pressure, using a lever between the mudflat bracket and crossmember, to give the rivnut more purchase can allow the bolt to be unscrewed. I would spray some penetrating oil around first. Failing that its cutting the bolts off, drill or knock out the rivnuts and replace with new ones plus bolts. 2015 90 XS CSW TDCi - Beautiful 2007 110 XS DCPU - An itch that needed scratching 2005 90 Td5 XS CSW - Utterly brilliant 2001 Discovery 2 ES Auto - A phase I went through 1996 90 Tdi CSW - Uber reliable 1989 90 2.5 Petrol Hardtop - My first proper Landy 1985 Range Rover Vogue V8 -Troublesome |

Hi many thanks for your reply.
The problem I have is I cannot get access to the nut. The crossmember is boxed in. At the moment even if I get the bolts undone, I will not be able to hold the rivnut to add new bolts, or nuts and bolts for that matter. All I can think of is using a small magnet to hold a washer behind the hole and use a river to reattach, but that's near impossible. How did they get them in there in the first place?? Many thanks |

If you manage to get the existing bolts out of the rivnuts, leaving the rivnuts intact, you can then use a simple homemade tool (look on google) to tighten the rivnuts to stop them spinning again

The existing bolts are rusted beyond use, I'm going to have to cut them out.
I have just ordered a rivnut tool with some stainless rivnuts, they should work fine. Many thanks |

I had the same problem, the funny thing was that the bolts I used the penetration oil on we're the ones I had trouble with spinning rivnuts. End result was only two rivnuts now remain. I cut the bolts out using a new hacksaw blade pushed inbetween the bracket and the underside of the crossmember. Fished out the rivnuts complete with bolt shanks using a magnet. Painted the underside of the crossmember, job done, doubt the mud flaps will be replaced, underside doesn't hoard as much muck now and no nasty trap between brackets and crossmember.

I found a rear nearside mud flap hanging of today. It looks like the failure was a broken bracket at the outside bodywork end. The other end was still connected and as you say it the bolt was corroded. I pulled the bracket off it looks like I may be able to get a small spanner (8 or 10mm in to the box section through the opening near the bracket mounting).
Hope to get a better look tomorrow. |

Ok quick update,
I purchased on eBay a rivnut tool with 100 pieces of various sizes of rivnuts. The total cost was less than £20. On Monday I will be cutting and drilling out the old to put in new nuts, and attach the new brackets with stainless bolts. I will post pictures...if I can figure out how to do it!! Is there a page for members showing with pics how to do jobs? Would be worthwhile having. Back soon Cheers |
