Surely the easier thing to do, seen as they admitted 100% liability, would have been to just insist that your car was repaired for you. You'd get the same result (or at least a replacement crossmember - no bad thing on a Td5 of that age) without the hassle of doing it yourself and ending up with a write-off against your car.

A third party's insurance company can not write off your car in this situation unless you allow them to.

I quite agree, if life was simple, I would have done just that......

The blue Galaxy is owned by the MOD, I take it you have never dealt with the MOD when it comes to accidents?

If you run an MOD white fleet VRN through an insurance check website it comes back as uninsured. Clearly it's not but it worries your own insurance company.

To put it into perspective, it took the MOD 3 and a half months to admit it even had a vehicle involved in the RTC. There were a number of reasons for this, the main one being the 'white fleet' manager who is responsible for passing on the accident report form to the fleet insurers was on sick leave for 15 weeks......

I'm a serving soldier, so I was able to do a little of my own leg work to find out the delays - that proved to be an uncomfortable experience.

As I'm controlling the repair, I know exactly the state of the vehicle and components going into the rebuild, I'm able to upgrade various bits and carry out other preventative repairs as and when.

The body shop quotes and engineers reports are all geared up for maximum profit / minimum hassle for the insurance industry.

I'm happy with my solution. Sandy

As the roof is off, I might as well sound proof it!

Not the MOD no, but I work for a government body which has a similar arrangement in that we have Crown exemption from the requirement to insure or tax our vehicles - so I can understand what you mean! It does worry people when you mention that there is no insurance (as most people understand it) covering the vehicles.

Glad to see you are making the best of a bad situation.

Shocked Was the welding done with a butter knife? Once grounded it will undoubtedly look a lot better but from the welding I witness in my job it did surprise me somewhat. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

Thanks!

The sound proofing is all sourced from eBay:

Dynamat equivalent stuff - foil backed bitumen sheet

10mm closed cell self adhesive foam

Thinsulate self adhesive blanket Sandy

Thanks for the update.

Hoping to do this soon, looks much easier with the roof off.

Do you feel that is the max depth you can go in order to not interfere with the roof lining going back on?

Also looks like a good time to fit a central roof light.
