having seen a few variations on the theme, I decided to have a go at a quick release steering boss that is as close to standard depth as I could get. SailingTom's boss was the best I'd seen yet.
I bought a standard 48 spline steering boss from ebay for £28 plus shipping http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221935540889?_tr...EBIDX%3AIT Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge I found a second hand NRG boss for £30 I cut off the excess material from the boss, before turning a recess for the QR hub to sit. I left about 8mm of thickness on the boss, for strength. The NRG hub is recessed by approx 5mm into the boss. I had to turn a little off the outer diameter of the spline housing. I cut countersinks into the QR hub too, although this is for cosmetic reasons as normal screws wouldn't foul the QR hub anyway, or the hub security lock. If there was a decent market, I'd think about machining more, but for the hassle, it's not worth it. I'm sure one of the big tuning companies will knock off the NRG boss and have it made with an LR compatible boss soon anyway! I'm pleased with it and it's one more layer for a thief to get through before they can steal my defender. |

Iwould worry about the insurance on that diy mod mod .....and you can buy of the shelf bosses that are slimmer! |

Lovely job Mike, thats what I started doing before I sold the defender.
No need to worry with the insurance either as that wont be going anywhere once fitted. I know the slimmer ones your talking about from china and there compared to the NRG one. Great work |

im guessing its the quick release being referred to rather than the boss, as you wont get thinner than that unless you weld the notched part rather than still bolting it. although think yours is the most practical. |

It's no different from the people who fit non type-approved steering wheel bosses and hubs to their vehicles. I dont think the bolt on bitsones are certified either.
If I crashed and the cause was the steering wheel, It'd be an issue. I dont think that's very likely purely based on the fact that I've shortened the boss. I have the facilities to have the material metalurgically tested for metal composition, have the design tested for strength and computer modelled for failure point, and have all components non-destructively tested for integrity. I dont intent to do any of it however! |

I think the quick release is better than the one you used as as it wears the fit is compensated for unlike the ball bearings! and it is tuv approved! I think you need to tell your insurer that you have a quick release in situ but each to their own I suppose!After a year of use I am very happy with the system in place on my truck and there is no play in the system..... but I would be as happy as a dog with two dicks if I had manufactured it myself so respect! |
