I wasn't a huge fan, but I recognise that he was a massive influence on British popular culture.

I know everyone has their favourite period, mine was the albums he made in Berlin with Eno, Heroes and Low both turned into great works by Philip Glass some time later. For most of us our life is signposted by the music we listened to at the time, sad and too early.
