HD Rear wheel carrier fitted
New bracket fitted to raise the spare wheel a couple of inches allowing better access to the tow bar.

Blocks a bit more vision out of the back window but with the tints it hasn't really had that much effect.

Looks a nice piece of kit, still doesn't fix the age old issue of a heavy wheel trashing your hinges and potentially cracking the door structure though.

I'm going to invest in a swing-away wheel carrier soon, even though my door is fine right now.... 2016 D4 HSE

Yeah looked at wheel carriers but having 6 defenders now over the last 20 odd years, all running larger tyres, I've never had a problem with the hinges or doors cracking so decided to go with this option.

Where is this from? It could be handy when I sort my Nato hitch out as that would sit much higher closer to the bottom of the current spare wheel.


Is it an easy install?


Have you a picture with the wheel on from the back and even from the view if you can out the back?

Hi Stacey007, I put it on for that very reason, I usually have a NATO hitch on but can't access it with the 285 tyres I'm running. It's much stronger than the original being 6mm plate.

It's probably a 20 minute job to swap it over, whip the wheel off, pop the door card off and the 6 bolts can then be accessed.

I think it was £68 from foundry4x4

That's a very interesting observation. I started a thread a while back about wheel carriers and asked opinions on the strnegth of the rear door and hinges, and why would LR make them this way if they couldn't take the weight of the wheels and tyres?

How long have you kept your Land Rovers for and how many miles did you do in them? Was any of that off road? 2016 D4 HSE

TBH I've never had issues with the new style all steel rear doors on any of my Puma Defenders either although did have a couple of the earlier steel frame aluminium clad doors as fitted to previous models crack at the frame joints. Steve.

Has anyone weighed a standard Steel Wheel/Tyre and an Alloy/bigger tyre?

Has anyone found a way of stopping the tyre hitting the rear wing/light without the swingaway?

Just out of interest, I have a swing away and really don't like it, mine rattles around.

^^ HD Wolf steel wheel plus 235/85R16 tire totals about 35KG, alloy wheel plus same size tire about 4KG less.
My spare never hit anything at all, not when installed on the door, not today with the Kaymar either.

Fit a gas damper for the door from Brendan (Leeds) to stop wheel hitting the wing.

I had the TD5 for 10 years, 100k miles carrying a Mach 5 with 33inch tyre on it with no worries. Even had a couple of bikes hanging off it occasionally.

On my Camel 110 I put a wheel carrier on the back but that was due to the beating the door was taking from 1000s of miles on corrugated gravel roads across Africa.

Not to rob Brendan of a potential sale but the standard door stay is really quite easy to adjust simply by moving the bracket bolted to the wheelarch forward. This method will obviously require drilling one or two more holes in the wheelarch and blanking the old holes. Steve.

I'm thinking of this wheel carrier as it would give more gap for a nato hitch and generally make it easier to reach the towbar which even I use.

I have std wheels will it look odd with a std wheel on it? ie will it fit a long way out from back of door.

The carrier I've fitted lifts the wheel up but not out from the back door so youshould be ok.

I'm fitting my NATO hitch back on at the weekend so will stick some pics up when done.
