I went down the route of:
Turners performance head BAS VGT turbo Allisport drop in intercooler. Foam air filter Stainless pipes and silicone hoses for intercooler Full flow stainless exhaust custom built. Ally radiator with revotec heavy duty electric fan. I tweaked the fuel pump to suit these modifications. It runs really well with these mods. I have not had it on a dyno, but it feels really quick and has lots of torque that just seems to pull effortlessly. The only thing I would do differently is go for the full size intercooler rather than the upgraded drop in type just to help keep the egt temps down a bit more. |

What EGT you getting?? Ive got a EMS2 fitted and traveling into Scotland and on the Outer Hebrideas its had a good work out, Got the EGT alarm set at 690 and its only touched it once, Boost at the Manifold has been upto .9Bar and Coolant max has been 89deg. Got an electric fan with a manual switch and havent needed it yet.
When fitting full size Intercooler do you have to fit an Aircon grill? Got a winch and thus dont want to have to get a new bumper cause of that lol. |

A few easy, effective and cheap mods to do....
Check your turbo is in best condition. A new cartridge is easy to fit and only costs £160. Check engine is in good condition internally - compression, bores, cooling, etc. Replace Air filter - K&N or similar. Replace Exhaust - go for single box, bigger bore - regular steel is fine. Tune the FIP If budget allows; the larger intercooler is very good (only to be used with EGT gauge fitted) Rolling Road tune & tune FIP again. Enjoy Expensive turbo and/or cylinder head put the costs in a different league. It's only a 300tdi so can only take so much tweaking before reliability suffers. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1989 Defender 90 Toyota Aygo & Honda FR-V |

i would do as ^^^ tweak FIP to suit desired EGT first.
then upgrade intercooler and tweak again then add VV turbo and tweak again. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Cheers for the reply, Cant see the point of a Performance filter as it has a snorkle lol
The engine feels in good condition but would still do a compression check before throwing money at it ! Just need to learn how to tweek the FIP. !! |

Hi Dave,
The performance air filter is the best item you could fit. If the air doesn't get in, you can not create the power. There are plenty of FIP tuning guides on the Net - easy to find. http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic21125.html?highlight=filter On a 2.2 Puma it would seem that a performance air filter is the worst item you could fit! |

i seem to think i read somewhere performance filters can increase piston or bore wear on a 300tdi though i may have dreamt that My 109 thread

Ive always seen the airfilters as a gimik unless there is a reason for them eg your engine would destroy a paper filter !!! But guess I could give it a go.
JST will send you a PM with my addy shortly cheers bud. Im guessing the sensible route would be Airfilter ( Maybe) Intercooler - FIP tweek Exhaust Performance head - FIP Tweek VVT/VGT - FIP Tweek Remove speedo and have SUPER LARGE EGT, BOOST read outs in its place!!! |

I've not seen a single objective test showing that a "performance" filter outperforms a standard one, even on fairly modified engines. Several tests have found that the performance filters can be slightly worse though!
As a side note, the oil in oiled performance filters can play hell with maf sensors. |

Miker depends what you mean by performance, If you mean a replacement panel filter then I agree but if you mean any performance filter then I strongly disagree.

I've seen comparisons with both drop in replacement panel filters and the open cone type.
One test even went so far as to run a test without any filter, still no gain! It depends if the filter is actually choking the inlet, if not then there are no gains to be had. |

I might be thinking backwards as usual, but if a replacement filter is the same size then wouldn't the only way for more air to pass through it be if it filtered it less?
