EGR Removal kit installation
Today I turned the heater on in the garage and let it heat up a bit. Took the Rangie for drive to get it washed and filled up with gas while the garage got warm.

I parked 110 in the garage and decided to install parts from a package I received over the holidays. I had forgotten I ordered an EGR removal kit. Pretty simple to do just a bit fiddly and tight to get at the exhaust blanking port.

First you need to expose the engine by removing the shroud and engine acoustic cover.

Spray some penetrating oil on the exhaust bolts from the back side as the holes go through, this way you can soak the threads to make it easier.

Remove the intercooler hose from the EGR, undo the bolts securing it to the intake.

Then the two bolts holding the pipe to the cylinder head and finally the two bolts securing the exhaust flange.

By now the penetrating oil has done its work.

Now disconnect the vacuum line to the EGR and remove the unit.

The kit came with everything including gaskets, bolts, and vacuum plugs. Installation is very straight forward, just be sure to install the exhaust blanking plate with the notch down and to the left.

Secure the bolts and the intercooler hose.

Remove the unused vacuum line from the solenoid and plug the blue vacuum line.

Increased acceleration and throttle was noticed immediately. No appreciable difference at the tailpipe was noticed. No ECU changes are required and no codes are present.

Regardless the engine obviously will breath much easier

Now without that space occupying lesion in front of the intake.

All in all a good hour to spend with your Defender and £20 well spent I think.

That looks like a nice kit with a well made s/s blanking connector. Do you have a link?
Any issues with emissions testing in Ottawa. Will they check to see if the EGR is present or do you get a bye since it is a diesel?

Price has gone up a couple pounds since I bought it. As for emissions as long as it is a 1999 or older you would be okay. If it is newer you need it to be OBDII compliant to pass Ontario emissions. If you live in a rural area like up the valley in Renfrew no worries. They don't do emissions up there. Also no issues in Quebec they do not do emisiions at all (yet). One more thing, to bring a Defender into Canada it needs to be 15 years old to be granted entry by Transport Canada. 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

Thanks for this "how-to", it's always reassuring to see real pictures of someone doing it rather than drawn diagrams which somehow only tell half the story.

Question for UK members, would this be a problem on a 2000MY Defender with regard to MOT emissions test? 1999 Td5 110 CSW

Won't be a problem for the emissions test, but you should fail the MOT if the tester notices that the EGR valve has been removed.

Definitely use penetrating oil! Snapped one of the bolts on mine the other week.

Ref MOT: Fortunately the acoustic cover shields it pretty well, and they won't/aren't allowed to remove covers!

FWIW in Ontario (Canada) we have more stringent emissions testing than UK (but less stringent overall MOT testing) and mine passes no issues with no cat and no EGR. As has already been posted the tester is only allowed to hook it up and run the test... (it passes). If you do it, good luck.

The 2000my is a liitle different as you also have a EGR cooler on that pipe that runs across the front of the block. EU3 as opposed to EU3 IIRC. So you've to think what you will do with that.

I removed mine - buying blanking ends for the end of the solid coolant pipe by the alternator and the multi connection near the header tank.

^^ Interesting!

I removed my TD5 Disco's EGR cooler and used a brass reducing spigot thingy to bypass where the cooler had been. I wasn't sure if simply blocking the coolant flow previously running through the EGR cooler would cause problems.

I wondered the same - and someone on here in an old post raised the worry about coolant flow - but further research revealed that Land Rover removed it on the last generation of D2's.

They had a blanking plug into the oil cooler where the EGR cooler pipe originates. The plug was available, I found the part number, but it was disproportionately expensive !

I was going to remove the hard pipe that comes from the oil cooler and blank it myself - but ran out of time on the day.

So long story short - if Land Rover are happy with blanking it off - so am I.
