It's TOO bloody small!
I will be fitting an additional tank soon... OZ is a pretty big place between stops! YOLO... You Only Live Once... |

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the replies - agreed the tank is too small ! Have already fitted a 30 litre additional gravity fed one (inside RH wheel arch on RHD vehicle). I'm refiling with 68 litres 20 miles into the low fuel zone - when, depending on the size of the original tank & the other info I mentioned, I should be putting in significantly more. I don't know whether I have 85l or 90l diesel capacity, and why the low fuel warning is coming on 'so early'. All the best, nik h |

Just to add further flavour to this stultefyingly boring subject to some, I read in an Italian Defender workshop manual that the low fuel warning light comes on at 12 litres.
So now we have the light coming on - officially - at 12 litres, maybe 14, or at 17% of 55 litres, or 60 litres! This is my first Defender. Hilarious! Still have only a vague idea of fuel tank capacity - have achieved 30.1 mpg in just over 3k miles ownership - on road, no added heavy weight, Alive Stage 2 remap + Serck intercooler, Conti AT tyres. nik h |

I have had the embarrassment of mis-fueling my My16 90
Filled the tank with unleaded and then realised as I put the nozzle back in the pump. LR assist sent AA who emptied the tank using the vehicle fuel pump (rather than syphoning through the fule filler etc). He commented that he took about 55litre out, which I thought slightly odd at the time as it is supposed to be a 60L tank. Obviously the fuel pump can't draw the last 5L. With hindsight, this probably meant that when he stuck 5L of diesel in to get me going, it was running on a 50/50 mixture? My low fuel light came on once just as I pulled onto the forecourt and I think it took about 48L to fill. I definitely remember it being less than 50L. Hope that is of any interest. |

Thanks APT100, yes, of interest.
I can put in 37 litres into the tank 40 miles after the low fuel light comes on. Doesn't seem right? That's the reason for doing all the researching. All the best, nik h |

Thanks for the tip mcgiver!
You guys in Oz have a great Defender site in aulro.com. I enjoy it. Direct banter. Would be good too to get some answers - perhaps a request to the UK LR rep - not sure how? Happy New Year. All the best, nik h |

Just to add to the conspiracy/confusion (delete as appropriate ) the fuel tank size isn't in the owner manual. If you look in the index it points you to the specification page - but when you turn to that page the tank capacity isn't shown.
edit LR rep was pointed at the thread where I asked that question but didn't address it. |

Both of mine trigger a low fuel light at 12 litres. Still getting used to the reduced range from a 90, but last week it took 51.79 litres to brim it, 20 miles after the light came on. The 110 takes 63 litres brimmed when the light comes on. Keep it simple - poverty spec.

Unfortunately the Defender 90 does not have the choice of replacement main tanks and extra tanks that the Defender 110 has.
To my knowledge there are no larger replacement main fuel tanks for the 90 whereas you can get a 120 litre replacement tank for the 110. Also there are more tanks listed for TD5 and pre TD5 tanks then for 2.4 and 2.2. Now I will have to do more research to find out if a TD5 tank will fit a 2.4/2.2 Wing tanks are available for the 90, the 30 litre Safari Equip one is about £240 Safari Equip, Front Runner and Long Ranger all list sill tanks for the early 90's however very few tanks listed for 2.4/2.2. but the confusion comes from LR claiming 60L, such as this page from latest brochure
Click image to enlarge edit: experience suggests 55L and then as mentioned manual doesn't help index says see pg 114 for capacity of fuel tank, but nothing on page 114 Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

Same problem with Heritage 110: manual mentions a specific page - but then the page does not quote the fuel tank size/capacity.
Have the extra 45l right rear fender Frontrunner tank - should one accept its quoted capacity is correct: the beep and fuel light came on recently - I was within eye contact distance of a service station: refueled to 1'st click/auto shut off and reading was 103 liters. Light/ beep quoted to come on @ 9 liters/4 gallons (imperial?) - 103+9 = 112L; - 45L add. Tank = 67 liters ... And not the quoted 75 liters in brochures (but not in manual...) Unless there is some funny algorithm that activates the warning light/beep when you have say 80km left at your current consumption rate - I seem to remember that the light/beep may activate at 80km range (alternatively) - but 9 liters is not always equivalent to that particular range? This may well be possible by the vehicle ECU. - as a Scangauge +/- Ultragauge are able to give you warnings according to parameters set by the user - still experimenting with this and will comment when more details are available. |
