The UK's petition madness
Unbelievable.

Whilst there's lots to love about the UK, some parts of 21c Britain drive me mad. This kind of nonsense would be a laughing stock in France if people could even bother to rake a moment of their time to consider it. Having said that, some of the petitions were so stupid as to be funny. Not sure whether I preferred the following:

In March, attendees at the NUS Women's Conference in Solihull claimed clapping was “intimidating” and “distracting”. The NUS Women's Campaign then tweeted: "Some delegates are requesting that we move to jazz hands rather than clapping, as it's triggering anxiety. Please be mindful!"

or:

Dublin café owner Paul Stenson caused a major beef with the vegan community in August after he joked he would shoot them at “point blank range” should they visit his White Moose Café.

This followed his Facebook message:

“**ALL VEGANS BARRED FROM OUR CAFE**

Given the torrent of abuse and unjustified negative reviews we have been receiving from the vegan population over the past 24 hours, all vegans are now barred from our café. Any vegans attempting to enter the café will be shot dead at point blank range. Thumbs Up

While we wouldn't usually kill any of our customers, as you say yourselves "meat is murder", so it's fair game if we murder humans as well as animals. There is clearly no difference.

We look forward to never welcoming you vegans to our café ever again.”.

Vegans responded by bombarding his TripAdvisor page with terrible reviews, despite never visiting the gaff.

Stenson stood his ground. Bow down

I think you can safely ignore anything the NUS does, they're a bunch of money and time wasting fools.
When I was at university (not that long ago) they threatened to basically cause a riot on the campus (which if they'd done their research they'd have found there wasn't a campus) because the debating union (which wasn't affiliated to the students' union) wanted to invite a member of the BNP for a debate.

NUS have a "no platform policy" which is a farce in its own right, and on the back of that two members of the national executive decided to threaten the students and local population with bus-loads of protesters.

Not my university, but sums up my views rather well:

Their Facebook page is brilliant - they couldn't pay for the advertising they've been getting - and most of the comments are from people who want to visit

One of my friends is still at Uni and relayed to me a story which had happened there.

They were to have a lecture from Katie Hopkins who is not the most open minded of people it has to be said, with some very narrow and often offensive views on immigration, the eu etc

The Student body thought as a protest to her closed mindedness they would buy every single seat in the auditorium where she was to have her lecture, then once she starts speaking for everyone on mass to stand up and leave, not allowing her to say her part.

Because if your at uni you MUST be a lefty otherwise why are you here.....

So the student body came across looking closed minded and petty, Hopkins got paid for a hours work and then left after 15 mins and the uni came out looking very silly.

Yay student win Rolling Eyes

I do get very annoyed with the endless SIGN THIS PETITION WERE GOING TO MAKE A CHANGE rubbish. All it does is end up in 6 months time in some Humphrys inbox so he can quietly delete it because Mp's should be debating important things instead of bringing back Clarkson to Top Gear
