With that amount of grass you need a Scag or a Ferris Rotary 36'' cut minimum!

When it comes to ride on mowers I'd thoroughly recommend John Deere for quality, reliability and fantastic residual value

Second vote for a mulching mower - or a dual collecting or mulching so you can do the first cut of the season or if its very long and collect the bits, but otherwise mulch it down, if you collect from 1/3rd of an acre, you will have huge amounts to get rid of and grass clippings don't compost well on their own.
If you mulch you can only cut 1/3rd of the length of the grass at a time, so if its got long you may have to cut twice to get rid of the bits. Viking is the 'domestic' arm of Stihl so good quality. I use a 25 year old Westwood ride on that I bought for £100 a few years ago with a powered sweeper and I've also got a Snapper rear engined ride on mulcher, superb as there's no plastic, very basic, big levers, cables and clevis pins, none of the electrical controls that can cause so many problems! |

John Deere or Stiga, with mulching deck.
Although the JD would need to justifie a large lawn for the money. Other ride ons are usually all made by the same manufacturer, just branded differently. Most are made by Electrolux, believe it or not! Could probably do you a good deal on good Second hand Stiga!...

Mulching decks are great, but only if you cut the grass when it is pretty dry. Once you are forced to cut it in a period with very regular rains, so with wet grass, a mulching deck clogs everything up underneath and you will need to regularly clean the deck out. We have a very large lawn, looked at one of the bigger John Deere garden tractors, but they are hellish expensive here, so opted for a much cheaper 26HP Husqvarna with a side throwing 54" deck. 5 years and 250 hours operating done now, and it works a treat just with one full maintenance per annum, and one additional intermediaray oil change and greasing job. The side throwing just works fine if you mow once per week, the evacuated cut grass is composting just like the grass from a mulching deck does.

We bought a Mountfield SP555 18 months ago. No regrets. Self propelled as the initials suggest, Honda engine, alloy deck guaranteed for ten years, a wide cut, and either mulch or pick up the cuttings. The Honda mowers we thought over priced, but this one has the benefit of their engine without the price premium. Ian One wife - livid

Hayter are owned by Toro now
I have just over an acre, but around 0.6 of an acre of grass. 2 years ago I was going to buy a Hayter, but on finding-out that Toro now own them I bought a 55cm Toro with a Briggs & Stratton engine  Click image to enlarge It's OK but has drawbacks. I needed one that "mulches" as I can't dispose of all the grass cuttings Mine does not pick-up well into the grass box... but it does mulch well. Maintenance is easy. A cheap paper air filter, a quick oil change, and a sharpen of the blade every spring At 6hp, it's not massive power for 55cm maybe But good value...available for around £450. I could really do with something a bit bigger for my garden, but in Scotland the growing season is a bit shorter
Problem for me with a sit-on is that my garden has slopes, so I need at least 16-17hp (and getting expensive) to manage the slopes with my 14 stone on top, plus the extra space needed to store a sit-on over winter. If I had more space in my garage I would rather fill it with something more useful  I did think about a quad-bike with mower attachment, then at least I can play on it in winter (I live next to a beach) Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |
