Not cheap but I go 'hayter' every time. My dad is still using his 40 year old hayter (green goddess)
I've had mine (second hand to me) for about 7 years and it's tip top |

I bought a Honda HR1950 some 24 years ago and it's still going strong. I have about 1/4 acre in total. Apart from normal servicing, ie new plug, air filter and fuel filter plus a blade resharpen which I do myself I have not had to carry out any more work on it. After it has been laid up and serviced for the winter it usually takes three or four pulls to start it. During the summer it starts first pull every time. I know they are at the top end of the price range but with the Honda you certainly get what you pay for - quality.

Haytors like everything arnt what they used to be.
Try and get a plastic deck. Good engine. Briggs or Honda. And with that size area,self propelled. And one with a roller on the back for nice stripes |

I've not got one, but when I was looking to buy recently, Hayter came out tops on my list.
The gardener who does the grass opposite the 6 houses on our street also uses Hayter, so assume they are a good choice for the professionals. Cheers Simon |

Hi, our business is selling commercial and larger garden machinery but when it comes to smaller pedestrian mowers I would recommend Kaaz, Sarp or Danarm. All Japanese machines based on the older Honda models. Brilliant quality with bomb proof Honda engines fitted and spares are readily available too. Look them up. I couldn't recommend them enough. Maybe a little pricey but as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for!

I would also second what rich has to say as to Hayter now being a low quality item. Sadly not anything like they used to be. Built using cheap parts and chocolate gearboxes on self propelled models! Sadly a product of our modern 'throw away' mentality!!

I have an 18" Honda mower for about 1/3 acre of grass and it's way too small, takes 2-3 hours! Having said that the Honda engines are simply the best never any trouble starts first time every time. However I strongly recommend a ride-on mower, it will give you more time to play with your Defender!

I have a Stiga mulching mower which is excellent, and negates the need to collect and dump grass cuttings.
If you buy a cheapo job you'll be buying another in a couple of years! |

Honda vote here.
Anyone tried Viking at all? Tried a Stihl machine this year (Kombi) very impressive and most powerful I've used! That isn't a mower of course... |

Etesia Pro mowers are great with tough plastic decks and honda engines.

We have a Viking - best one we've had. Powerful motor for the size of cut means it doesn't struggle, and it fills the grass box right up.

With half an acre of lawn to mow and you want a push or motorised mower I take it you’re a young man!  I have about the same amount of grass and in the summer when it needs mowing at least once a week sometimes twice, it takes long enough with the sit / ride on mower, I would never manage it in the time I alot if I used a motorised push mower.
Don’t rule out a ride on as they make life a lot easier…at least for us oldies they do.  I bought a Honda HF 1211 HE second hand and can recommend it, even the wife finds it easy.  For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

I have one of these John Deere JS63VC that I use when ground too wet and soft for my Kubota ride on.
I have found it to be a great mower and very manoeuverable...  993 Varioram - Guards Red
