Aaahhh, but the line is still going.
However, what is the "New" "Date Of Last Production"?....Have JLR announced a new one? Pickles. |

I sincerely hope you're right Retro, 'cos mine is going in Feb/Mar..... all I have to do is make sure the cook is out when buyers flock round (they will won't they?) and drive it away.

I think it is a time to celebrate!
We have, hopefully the right example of the Defender we wouldnīt mind being buried in, and there is just enough information here and generally amoungst the enthusiasts, to keep our Landyīs running for a long time. As long as the authorities and insurance companies donīt make them too expensive to enjoy as regular transport, I am happy. There are alot of new ones on the road over here, reflecting the boom of the last year of production. Every time I get into my company hack (430 hp) and find myself trying to drive it slow enough to avoid rampant mobile phone maniacs, speed cameras and traffic jams, i look forward to climbing back into the Landy. The price of used ones already indicates where things are heading..... 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MTīs, Recaro CSīs, anorak, wellingtons |

Time for me to celebrate too...
I did NOT buy one in 2015! Next week I'll visit the dealer who's still got my five hundred quid deposit which I lodged in 2013, to check what's yet to come out of the factory in 2016. Peter |

I would not be too down hearted. I am sure that the boffins at JLR have been working hard to fulfil a Tata directive to make sure that the Defender replacement will have enough inbuilt problems and glitches to enable this and similar forums to keep on going.
The Puma was introduced after similar vehicles had been produced at Solihull for many decades yet it too had it's foibles. Take a look at the other forum pages dealing with the Range Rover and the Discovery. People await the new latest model with anticipation to upgrade from their existing model that has or has had problems. Then they find out that the new models have their own set of problems. If Land Rover cannot solve water ingress into the Defender after it being produced for 60 years you have to wonder... if not laugh! Over here the Land Rover Defender Adventure 110 model is priced at over 72,000. Yet anyone who buys one will still have the same issues as us lesser mortals who drive earlier and much less expensive Pumas. When I see Land Rover having the confidence to offer a 5 year or a 7 year warranty ( ) I'll know that they will have taken the time and effort to give us a real quality product that they have confidence in. I think the new Defender will be aimed at the biggest market segment they can target. In our view they will probably "dumb" it down but in their view they'll be targeting a whole new audience. If they are selling less than 20.000 vehicles per year to a certain audience i.e. us Defender nuts and they can replace that 20.000 with a 100.000 or more per year to a newer audience they will have no qualms about ditching the current Defender brigade. But don't despair. Us of the current Defender brigade will have fun reading about the multitude of faults on the new models when it arrives. Unless of course the replacement is that good that there will be no need for those owners to visit a forum like this. By the way, I think that you will get a good idea as to what " type" of vehicle the replacement will be when we hear about advance orders. If the military and utility companies start putting in orders by the thousands you will know that they have been consulted and promised something along the lines of the current Defender. If they avoid it you will know that we will be getting a completely different animal altogether. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

Spudfan, I think that's a pretty fair and accurate summary of the current state of affairs at JLR.
Sadly, the Defender product has been cheapened and 'watered down' over the years to the point at which it only appeals to a s a miniscule and specialist segment of the overall market for 4X4 vehicles. When you look at the 'value engineered' components that make up the current model, the variable quality control and the inconsistent levels of after-sales service, is it any wonder that many consumers simply wander off to another brand? I rather enjoy driving my 90, but every time I get up really close to it I can see the 'heritage' in the form of British Leyland, BMW, Ford and TATA accountants at work. As you point out, it will be very interesting to see what 'utility vehicle' the fleet purchasers and military start placing advance orders for. |
