Hi, the second last letter is the modelyear code. All the letters before this tells you only what type of Land Rover you have and where its produced.
Ex.: 90,110,130, Defender, hard top pickup station wagon etc. The digits are the productionnumber. -99 Td5 90 CSW -09 Jaguar xk4,2 Portfolio |

Chassis number is stamped on the chassis, engine number is etched on the engine, gearbox is stamped on the gearbox. Check your owners handbook for exact locations. The VIN numbers are 17 digits long... The HA##### you listed is likely the last 8 digits of the VIN wherein the "H" typically refers to the actual model year.
You will need one of these numbers to properly select parts for your Defender. http://vindecoder.eu/land-rover Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Once you figure this out parts numbers for your specific model and year can be accessed here. http://www.allbrit.de/NAV.cfm?PAGE=356171&SPRACHE=EN 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris) 2003 Range Rover Mk III (Desmond FitzWilliam) 2000 Defender 110 CSW TD5 (CTX) 1992 Range Rover Classic (Lizzy) 1972 Series III 300 Tdi (Stanwood) 1967 MGB GT Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats. When a parts supplier or catalogue says "from Y1234567"... That means yours is covered as it is model year "2" (2002) and the "from Y" means from model year 2000 on. Hope this helps some.

For example a web part says "Rear axle disc breaks suitable for the Land Rover Defender from LA930456." My defender Vin number is SALLDAM188 1A6B1228 How can I tell it will fit?? happy holidays Augusto Augusto Defender 110 TD5 2001 Discovery 4 TDV6 |

Land Rover started using the internationally recognized 17 digit VIN number system halfway through production models in 1983 and early 84. "A" was the first model year that they started using it (1983 & 84 MY) and B=1985 MY, C=1986 and so on. Yours is "1" because they needed to start over as the alphabet ran out they started using numbers instead of letters.
Presumably when the new Defender is finally built in 2016 or 17 (or whenever Gerry McGovern and his design team decide to get on with it) the convention for decoding the VIN will probably change again. The "L" in the number you listed refers to the year of build (1994) so when the parts suppliers lists "from LA930456" they are saying from 1994 Serial number 930456 to present. Since yours is a "1" which means a 2001 MY the part will fit. Hope this helps some? 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris) 2003 Range Rover Mk III (Desmond FitzWilliam) 2000 Defender 110 CSW TD5 (CTX) 1992 Range Rover Classic (Lizzy) 1972 Series III 300 Tdi (Stanwood) 1967 MGB GT Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats.
