Can the ABS and TC be switched off a 59 plate puma by depressing brake pedal 10 times straight after start up. I've been told it can but I thought this could only be done on td5 and 11MY models. I'm getting front and rear lockers fitted and was thinking about fitting an on/off switch do disable the ABS & TC.

I would if I wasn't stuck in a sandy place until April. No point me asking the misses to try as it's techical!! She is getting the lockers fitted as my xmas present. I thought if they couldn't be disabled by depressing brake pedal a on/off switch could be fitted at the same time. I'd rather have a switch than mess about with fuses. Enjoy the snow, I'm jealous!!

I also thought TC with lockers wouldn't be a problem, but a few people have said there could be problems when just using just the rear locker as it can cause stress and damage to the front axle. I don't understand why as on the 59 plate the TC is independent on each axle and with centre diff locked only 50% of the power is going to the front. I didn't want to take the risk as I'll probably only using the rear locker most of the time as steering is just about impossible with the front locked.

No pumas here, just 300tdi wolfs and plenty of TATA twin cabs

I discussed this at length with dave ashcroft (ashcroft transmissions). he maintains that its only an issue if you shock load the a front wheel/wheels ie you drive up a steep, rocky bank, your rear locker pushes you forward as a front struggles for traction, you crest the hill on three wheels (2 rears and one front) then as the weight transfer happens you bang down the free wheel and wallop, you break a half shaft. but that can happen anyway, regardless of lockers.
if youre sensible, and if your rear locker is engaged, you can generally driver slower anyway, at least if its loose ground rather than deep mud (in which you can spin anyway, lockers or not, if there is no traction at all the wheels will still all spin and you wont go anywhere anyway) |
