wheels not coming off
Morning all,

Trying to replace my wife's brake pads (mk5 golf) and stumbled at the second hurdle....

Got the wheel nuts off ok but now the wheel won't fall off as expected.

It's an alloy and it seems to have stuck to the steel hub - any thoughts on how best to get it off?

Is it just me big hammer job?

Thanks.

Large block of wood to spread the impact and some liberal application of Land Rover Special Tool #1 (especially if you have a large version)

Make sure the vehicle is secure on an axle stand,
Sit down infront of the wheel lean back and boot alternate sides with your heals.
*forgot to say rotate wheel as you do this.
Once off clean up and copper slip the wheel areas that contact the hub.
I do the wheel off and copper slip twice a year so I know they will be able to come off easy if needed. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

BiMetallic corrosion best way is to use another wheel and Bang left to right it will come off

Then make sure before refitting clean the hub and a small amount of copper paste around the mating surface Thumbs Up

All so if yours is same as my MK5 GTI you need to wind the rear pistons back into calipers

All sorted thanks to Mr lump hammer.

Shocked ....

erm hammer didn't but the block of wood the hamper was hitting did....to be far the tyre will replacing so as the walls are cracking and the tread is low.

but thanks for worrying me all the same ( Very Happy )

no happy all is good - so confident in fact I took it for a test drive rather than leaving it for the wife.

I can pretty much get straight onto a fast dual carriage way and then leave it to the last minute before island to check brakes work ok - and they do.

No seriously the sidewalls are not designed to take that type of impact hence swinging a wheel on to them Thumbs Up

AHA - that's sound like a plan in future.

or I guess the lying on back and using feet in future might be preferable to the hammer / wood option.

Thumbs Up

Ken. Didn't have a spare wheel but lying on my back did the trick - did the front brakes today.

All went very well which is handy as the wife is off down south tomoz so hopefully when she gets there she can confirm they still work.

Thanks for of the advice.
