the knee bone is connected to the hip bone....
these defenders never cease to amaze me. just wondering what odd things you may have noticed are linked to one another but didn't expect. for example;

I noticed on a few occasions that mine seems to be letting out a lot of white smoke. no loss of coolant, oil or anything else. however this seems to stop after cleaning the rear mirrors - how can this be?

I've also noticed that since disconnecting the ultraguage I don't get any low battery alarms first thing in the morning even though we're starting to get some colder morning where you'd expect the battery to be struggling a little?

The other one is the creaking clutch pedal. No creak smooth driving, gear changes and engine performance. Creaking clutch equals poor gear changes, rough running engine etc? surely must be more than just a creak? perhaps its up the creek?

what unusual components are interconnected on yours?

Mines seems to have a time of year parts like to stop working (around now) just had to replace wiper spindles and cable, headlight switch, thermostat and a side light bulb.
So should hopefully be all good till this time next year now Laughing

I had the squeaky clutch. I concluded that other negative effects were just caused by me being tense and stressed out by the sound as I used the clutch. It was like nails on a blackboard for me and drove me mad! Cheers, David

The ultragauge can be set to turn off when the voltage drops below a certain level or it may be staying on and draining the battery, I have mine so that when the engine is turned off, the simple action of opening the dooor so the inside light comes on makes the voltage drop enough for the ultragauge to turn off, its set to about 13.2V cut off.

driving along this morning and there's a kinda whistling .....seems to be coming from the rear diff. anyhow at about the same time a Virgin Train is whizzing along just the other side of the field next to me. anyhow how the diff noise seemed to disappear at about the same time the virgin train disappeared into the distance? the joys of having your window open all the time you hear so much more? so could the electro magnetic field around the train (it was an electric train) have an effect on the diff?

also good news on the ultragauge and the low battery alarm. the ultragauge remains disconnected and still no more low battery alarms Thumbs Up

Having followed your numerous posts about your frequent Defender related problems, and how various Dealerships and their mechanics have bent over backwards to fix these compound problems that keep happening to you.

I now have to say that this latest problem is indeed the strangest, in fact weirdest problem so far. As you know I and many forum members have often been at a loss as to what type of advice to give you and I think with this problem all forum members will be under qualified, I say under qualified as I now think that the main problem is that your Defender is in fact possessed and you need the talents of an exorcism priest rather than a mechanic. Razz

I had the local defender mech in shock and tears the other day.......

- I turned up moaning about my f'in clutch. it turned out that 90 in front of me had JUST had a complete new clutch and ancillaries.........so he suggested I try that clutch to see how it compared in terms of feel. Instead of jumping in I thought I'd just depress it by hand....anyhow it was well stiff? so thought I'd best jump in and try it with my foot. Now the mech and his assistant who'd just finished the job were next to the passenger door. I did think they were having a laugh at my expense as the clutch was more than just a little heavy - it barely moved! as I explained this to them and their expressions changed to a frantic shock I realised they weren't having me on and as my face was also one of disbelieve they knew I wasn't joking?
so they rushed round to try it and see what had happened.??
they tried it and the clutch was just fine - I'd only been pressing the middle pedal Rolling with laughter (I think I have a serious problem which I should keep an eye on?).

anyway - my clutch is well heavy and creaking by comparison. in fact the mech assistant reluctantly agreed mine was rubbish by comparison.

I'm not sure I'm welcome there anymore Very Happy

Not Defender but my Disco would run for months then suddenly start to misfire while stationary until I gave it a wash, strange I know but this went on for about two years and still did when I sold it. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

We start to better understand the origins of your multiple and ongoing problems. Rolling Eyes

Who said that? Not us... Whistle You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Personally I think someone who has a happy relationship with their puma defender really ought to be going and taking Caterham for a test drive once it their car and once in his so that a point of reference can be obtained, either Caterham is bonkers or his car is pooched. Just a thought and no I'm not volunteering as I don't have a puma to compare with. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.
