* Off-road company based in Windermere charged £96 flat rate to customers
* Guests at Lake District wedding say they had no choice but to pay the fare * Locals accuse the firm of 'exploiting vulnerable people' during Storm Desmond, when many roads were impassable * Company has offered a refund but defended its controversial actions "A 4x4 company has been accused of profiting from flood victims after it charged wedding guests nearly £100 to take them to a hotel which was just a few minutes away. Kankku Off Road Driving Adventure, which rents out off-road vehicles to Lake District holidaymakers, offered an emergency taxi service to people stranded by floodwater over the weekend. As well as carrying out a string of vehicle recoveries, the firm agreed to transport wedding guests and other pedestrians short distances because regular taxis could not use the roads. After receiving several complaints, the company agreed to refund its fee of £80 plus VAT for any unsatisfied customers - but the firm argued that the payment was justifiable because the wedding was 'not an emergency situation'. Well if you're paying £96 to go 3 miles, then there has to be some justification

Apparently they helped those in an emergency situation for free and said therefore they had a right to charge non emergencies what they wanted. Notice once the papers caught up with it they offered a refund to anyone who complained. Papers may well have distorted the real situation, however, it possibly leaves a slur against Defender owners

I live near the lake district and have done several greenlaning trips round the lakes.
If anyone wants any info on routes etc. give me a shout. I'd be happy to join a group as well, it's been a while since I've been out on the lanes! 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty" 1958 Series IIA 109 Station Wagon - "Randolph" - Awaiting Restoration 2019 Jeep Wrangler JL Rubicon - SOLD 2006 Volvo V70 D5 - Ocean Race Edition, SOLD 2003 VW Passat Estate 1.9TDI - SOLD 2008 BMW 320D M Sport Estate - SOLD 2001 Defender 90 Td5 Hard Top - SOLD |
