leaking fuel filter
Is a leaking fuel filter a common fault on TD5? Question

Mine did it 6 weeks ago. The plastic threaded drain point split and dumped half a tank on the drive home!

Is it the filter or the filter housing that is leaking? The housings rot away and also become porous. Also, if the filter has recently been changed, sometimes the old O ring stays in place and it becomes impossible to get a good seal with 2 O rings

My garage has removed the threaded plastic piece at the bottom of the filter and replaced the 2 week-old filter. They tell me that the plastic bit with wires attached is only to tell you if there is water in the fuel. Later models do not have it,and if vehicle is regularly serviced it is not necessary to be told of water in the fuel. No further leak so far. Very Happy

I had so many failures of the plastic drain screw that I replaced it with a steel bolt.
No problems since. There have been so many failures the filter assembly should have been recalled and an upgraded part fitted.
Try mentioning it to an AA or RAC man...........

I once had one where the dealer had not noticed that the original O Ring had remained on the housing. Ended up with 2 O rings...which leaked halfway up the A9 in the dark Sad

Sprayed the rear of the vehicle with expensive diesel... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

If you leave the two O-rings on the filter, the fuel leak will happen. For this you need to keep yourself well. For Sale: Parachute. Only used once, never opened

Recently replaced my filter housing after it rotted away and cracked at the mounting bolts. Expensive for what it is!

I carry a few spares - all based on previous experiences of failures in my previous Td5 but which are the same in our new 2.2:-

    main light switch - had one fail on us - fortunately just as we arrived at a campsite
    fuel filter drain plug - "what's that smell?" followed by finding the plug had cracked. Twice.
    fuses - our caravan consumes them for fun...
    standard relays - once had the Td5 fail to start intermittently and a bit of deduction showed the fuel pump wasn't running - simply a worn-out relay

I've had one other failure and that was the combined indicators/horn etc switch. I'm not changing that on the side of the road! I do have a spare from the Td5 at home but I'm not even sure the 2.2 uses the same switch (it has DSC). Dave

I replaced mine a while ago with an aftermarket version off ebay, its machined from solid aviation / defence grade aluminium billet and hard anodised for maximum corrosion resistance (copied the blurb on ebay).

Its quite expensive but is so much nicer quality than the original LR one.

I changed it as part of tracking down a fuel pressure issue - turned out not to be the issue but at least i know i'll never have issues with the filter head.

Thanks to all who have replied to my query.
The carrying of the spares mentioned seems a good idea.
I was beginning to think that buying a Land Rover was not a good idea.

O rings. My memory ain't the best but I don't recall any O rings when i've replaced filters (only on the oil filter).

Do the tdci filters have O rings - I presume they do but I don't recall fitting any?


as some might be aware for years my fuel filter hasn't been properly fitted and more recently it was having a 'wobble' on start up. fully rotating the fuel filter seems to have cured that.

what has been happening tho is a slight unevenness after start up. barely noticeable but it's there. just wondering if there's a very small amount of air getting in possibly due to an old O ring? or any other thoughts?
