Cubby removal - Nothing is simple with a LR!
In between work calls I thought I'd whip out the old cubby box as I start to prep for the interior changes. It's 4 torx screws, how hard can it be I chuckled to myself - no need to put on garage clothes or get many tools out, just a T30 bit.

Pulled out the cup holder and the front two screws whizzed out in seconds. Popped the caps off the rear two inside and started undoing them, then the inevitable and maddening spinning rivnut scenario on both of them. Evil or Very Mad

So now this will have to be a weekend job when I have a helper who can undo it while I'm underneath with mole grips holding onto the spinning offenders. If the damned car had been built properly this wouldn't be a problem!

This is the type of thing that bugs me about Land Rovers, it should be a simple 5 minute task, but now it will be a lot longer, just because. AARRGHH!!

One job creates 5 more...

If it makes you feel any better...'You are not alone!' From your rear view mirror experiences it should have been expected. Whistle

Regarding getting mole grips on the Rivnut, is there much space to get at it from underneath?

I have the necessary rivnut tool to tighten it once the old one is out.

Does the TDCi still have the removable floor plate under the cubby area or is that TD5 only? 2016 D4 HSE

It has a removable floor plate under the cubby

It would be difficult to get a purchase on the spiny bits, it can be done from the inside by applying slight angled pressure as you undo them. I wish you luck, hope its turns out to be a quick job

Good Luck

Oh how I feel your pain. The exact same thing happened to me and with the rear view mirror too!

Have you tried:

1. Doing it back up tight and then undoing? This can sometimes just be enough to nip the nut up.
2. Exerting sideways pressure on the head whilst unscrewing? I found this is most easily done with a powerdrive with a long extension piece (so you have some space). Get it spinning and then push against the head with a blunt object.

Both the above worked for me on the cubby. Once out I then drilled out and replaced the nuts.

Mole grips attached to the underside will stop the rivnut spinning and once the bolt is out use your rivnut tool to tighten the rivnut, then use copper slip on the bolts going back in.

Top tip, remember to retrieve the mole grips afterwards Mr. Green

The floor plate is still removable but you probably won't be able to get to the fittings with the cubby in the way

... and guess what I forgot the last time I did this. Thankfully after 100 miles up the M3/M25, they were still attached Very Happy

Good tips,

Was planning on taking the cubby box out to get at the filler 'oles for gerbox and transfer box on Effie our 2004 which came with cubby box fitted.

I fitted a cubby box to gertie our 1999 td5 110 but only used bolts at the time. Thought it would be a good idea to rteplace bolts with rivnuts. Can anyone recommend a rivenut tool to purchase. What sort of price are we talking about?
