Love my Maxx's. Quiet, good grip (no better or worse than any other heavy-block tyre) and in my opinion remain the best looking tyre on the market, if that matters to you? But overall, they do what they say on the tin. Go Maxx... Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not had ST Maxx's but I've got some AT3's on another vehicle, they are really good in all conditions, if you're driving on roads most of the time they'd be a good option, it's very muddy on the lanes around here at the moment and they perform very well.
I do prefer the 'look' of a more aggressive tyre on a Defender but that's just aesthetics. The AT3's are very quiet on tarmac too. |

Recently fitted AT3's to my Defender.
They look aggressive enough to 'look the part' without being OTT I'm impressed with their tarmac manners, seem more sure footed than the previous conti's and the ST's i had before. Off road ... I can't tell any difference from previous fitments, They've never got me stuck and drive everywhere the previous St's did with no issues. Horses for courses, I like them Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |

AT3 here too - very good on the muddy fields and slippy roads right now, I'm very happy with them.
Not tried the Max to compare. If you drive mainly on road, then the AT3 is the smart choice as it will surely outperform the Max on tarmac, and is unlikely to embarrass you in the mud (it's an AT after all). But if you prefer the more aggressive look of the Max then fair enough. |

Done about 10k on them so far with very little wear.
I'd buy some more, definitely a good tyre and they are available at a good price too, here's some pix fitted to SWMBO's car... The ST Maxx I have fitted have gotten me up some very slippery terrains in some shocking weather so they certainly get my vote. They have very good road manners too for the style of tyre and they make the defender feel very planted on the road. Off road the tread pattern doesn't clog like some of the closer knitted tread patterns of AT tyre (plus point is they look the business too!) Just my opinion

Boys, thank you for all your help. Both tyres appear to have merit, I think that I'm moving towards the maxx, especially if they have reasonable road manners ( which you guys and indipendent report suggest ) so, if I have this right, the maxx sits somewhere between an AT and a MT? Thanks again all

Unlike some on the forum, I'm not great remembering tyre numbers, but I think they're 265.75 x 16....
Here's a side shot. (Also look great from the front, sitting proud of the arches, but no photos on my iPad). I have 265/75x16 ST Maxx on my 90 and I have to say that the road manners are not a patch on the BFG AT's that they replaced. Obviously the ST Maxx have better off-road performance but I have to admit that I got it wrong and I should have gone for the tried & trusted BFG AT's again.
In the past I gave my tyres a lot more off-road use than I do now and I often felt that the BFG AT's were letting me down compared to the mud biased tyres that I used to run, the upside was the tremendous on-road performance and of course massive mileages that they could cover. Nowadays I venture off-road far less so it was obviously going to be a poor decision to get a more aggressive tyre at a time I was needing them less. Don't get me wrong, the ST Maxx are not a poor tyre on the tarmac but I have found the difference in performance so marked to that of the excellent BFG AT that I seriously regret my purchase. Looking to replace the General TR tyres that are on my 110 CSW.
Most of its life is on Tarmac so I am happy with the idea of the Cooper A/T3. I have hit a problem with getting some though. I can get them fitted at a good price by a Land Rover parts specialist in the Cannock area. I can't find them more locally as a fitted tyre. I can order them online but by the time I have paid for fitting they work out more expensive than the above. Does anyone have any suggestions for sourcing these in the West London/ South Bucks area. I can't justify a trip to Cannock just for the tyres it would have to be part of another trip. This is because I see I can get Continental Cross Contacts for about £100 a wheel fitted locally. So I need a reason to justify the trip. The current tyres are 235 85 R16 on Boost alloys. 1995 Defender 110 CSW 1971 SIIA Lightweight |

I had Enduro Runway (similar style AT to AT3) for a couple of years on the Defender and then put on some take off MTR's. I never had an issues with them and did a lot of green laneing, club trials and offroad days. I think the MTR's are probably better in extreme conditions but thats all.
