1999 Defender 110 Td5 SW Caledonian Blue

Viscous fan

Should the viscous fan be difficult to spin while the engine is off and cold? Or is this a sign of it being seized? 1999 Defender TD5 110

You will find if you keep turning it it will free up a bit if working properly. The fluid settles a bit so it will be stiff from rest.

Best test is to start the engine from cold, let it idle for a few seconds, and then try to stop the blades with a rolled up newspaper. Should be able to stop it fairly easily. Once hot it should turn the newspaper into confetti.

It will be quite stiff for the first few turns but then should loosen up. It still won't spin really easily though, so unless it is really hard to turn then it sounds ok.
