i'd hightly recommend the glenkinchie tour on two counts - done it and it's great and got a frien who works there:
http://www.discovering-distilleries.com/glenkinchie/ Just over the boarders so can be done en route in either direction. Si TY&GN 10 years in a WOLF, WIMIK and Snatch and this is all I have to show! |

No tour would be worthy of the name if it did not take in islay. You could also visit Campbeltown and Oban around the island tour. Then through Ft William en-route to speyside.

Trust you are aware that the Scottish have different laws relating to drinking and driving. Beware the morning after the night before as you may still be over the limit. What might be acceptable in England and Wales is likely to lose you your licence up in Scotland. You could drive up and take a ferry to Islay for some of their heavily peat smoked TCP (iodine) tasting spirit (a sort of medicine for real men) or go for a Lowland whisky, light and unsmoked (a less challenging experience). Speyside has some interesting distilleries but further North might require more than a weekend. If the weather deteriorates it might be a great trip in a Defender - battling through the snow drifts |

Trip to Islay will get you the most Distilleries.
Kennacraig to Port Ellen, Ferry. Ardberg, has the best food on the island, then take your pick from Bowmore (Harbour Inn is excellent base), Bruichladdich, Bunnahabhain, Caol Ila, Lagavulin, Laphroaig and Kilchoman (owned by the descendants of the Land Rovers originator). You could always take the Ferry across to Jura (weather permitting). May need longer than a week end!, Not all the Whisky's are as peated as as the "Holy Trinity". So you can taste before buying! Royal LochNagar, the distillery is behind balmoral castle.
Dependant on the time of year you can have all look around the grounds of the castle and go in the stables and one room in the castle. Russell 2011MY 110 XS USW Black |

When it comes to Whisky's I am definitely in the East Coast camp. I love the lighter more delicate flavour. I did a Whisky trail tour 14 years ago and my favourite tours were around Glenffidich closely followed by a then special request tour of Balvenie the sister distillery, both located in Dufftown. At the time Balvenie wasn't open for public tours. The comparison between the two was striking, Glenfiddich being very polished and tour ready and Balvenie being an unpolished working distillery. The smell when walking through the still rooms was amazing and noticeably different between the two distilleries. I love both of these single malts. Any farther South and I'll need to trade the Defender in for a Landing Craft

All of the above excellent suggestions.
Can I also say you check out "Raw Spirit" by Iain Banks. He visits many distilleries and has lots of recommendations on Great Wee Roads. It also has a Paen to the TD5 Defender as he owned a 110 Station Wagon. |

Tour where you like... but buy from Morrisons?
Some years ago I fell for the Single Malt hype, toured 'em all, bought from each, fantastic scenery, wonderful time. But when I fuelled up in Inverness before making my way home, I found everything that I'd purchased on the shelves in Morrison's at half the price. Well, not quite, but MUCH cheaper. Peter |

I'd make the first stop at Edradour Distillery just off the A9 at Pitlochry. The smallest distillery going, but well worth a tour.
Next stop would be Dalwhinnie. Both fine drams. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1989 Defender 90 Toyota Aygo & Honda FR-V |
