cam belt
chaps this may seem a very silly question , I have at 2010 puma , covered 16,000 miles , not much I know
however ive heard that cam belts need replacing
iss this something I should be considering soon ?

No such thing as a stupid question! And this forum is a great place to learn lots about defenders.

As far as I know the puma engines are chain rather than belt driven and therefore do not need changing. An expert on puma engines will no doubt be along soon to confirm or deny this.

Deff a chain nothing to worry about for another 100,000 miles

If it starts to go it will be the tensioner but you will hear it rattling usually on starting. Wink

On the TDCi you have chain drive to the camshafts, fuel pump and oil pump (ie the critical bits), and a flat belt drive for the alternator, air con compressor (if fitted), water pump, brake vacuum pump, and PAS pump (ie the non critical bits).

I forget what the recommended intervals for replacing the belt are, but my 2007 is running the orriginal belt still at 180k miles and 8 years, and of course the original chain.

Flat belts are much longer lasting than the traditional V-belt!

I had a conversation with some of the lads at our local Ford dealer, as I too needed to know what the recommended change interval was?

A few said they had never changed them, another guy said around 130,000.

I've done a few now, all around the 140,00/150,000 mark, just to be on the safe side.

Comparing old with new, there doesn't seem to be any "stretch" or wear in the chain.
The last one I did though, did have slightly worn teeth on the camshaft sprockets.

In the cam chain kit, you get new sprockets, tensioner, and crank sprocket, plus all the plastic guides, crank seal, and water way gasket.

I've always fitted a genuine seal, as the aftermarket ones seem to be a bit hit and miss in making a good seal.

Also the timing chain cover can be a bit tricky to remove without bending, so I always replace with a new one.
Cost is around £320 for the chain kit.
genuine Ford cover and seal comes in around £75.00 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

As far as I am aware the timing chain cover is designed as a single use item and is intended to be replaced if removed.

Yes I agree , I love this site , ask anything and you'll always get a genuine answer .
I had a query last week about an alarm topic, I had a fab answer , did what they said and now it's now perfect .

A great site the way it's run ,monitored and used Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Defender 90 Tonga green . My 2007 County .2.4Tdci puma .
Too many other Discos to mention, including a V8 petrol Disco3 and diesel Disco 3 !! ( All gone)
