Ah fair enough.

Does the alternator not have a W-output you could use then? Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

Pretty sure you can access the 'w' terminal if you remove the plastic on the back of the alternator. Its not a dedicated terminal anyway as such, just a point to pick up the un rectified ac waveform generated by the alternator. 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread

Hmm. Maybe this is worth me doing some digging. I'm going to add a homemade binnacle to the top of the dash between the fans so it doesn't matter if it's the same as the ones in the normal clocks or not. Maybe it's worth a punt on a really cheap one and I'll try it 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

Quite a lot of sellers do that. It must be easier to change the price twice than end the listing and open a new one - perhaps avoids any relisting fees too ?

got it in one! They can edit listings for free/cheap rather than paying for a new listing. Also means it stays in peoples watch lists, and if someone buys one at that price, all the better!!

I bought one for my Tdi which only goes up to 4k but must confess I haven't fitted it yet.

Unfortunately the TD5 requires a dedicated tachometer.

Not quite sure where the basis for the blanket opinion that the td5 can only be fitted with a genuine tachometer.

As i mentioned the 'w terminal' can be tapped into on the alternator to run any tach designed for diesel engines with a tacho feed. There should be loads of choice in the marine world.

Second option is the use of some pretty simple electronics connected to the ECU pin 19 and the use of a petrol engine tachometer. Main issue with this is the RPM scale will be usually 8000rpm max.

The Td5 rev counter signal is an emulated 4-cylinder pulse so it should be possible to fit a non-factory rev counter, set to 4 cylinder.

It might be necessary to do some level shifting to adapt voltage levels but nothing impossible. The Td5 pulse is 0-5V and the gauge might expect 12V pulses.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Martin is correct, a simple transistor circuit is all that is really required to convert the 5v 50% duty factor square wave produced by the ECU to a 12v signal needed by coil connected petrol tachometers. This is quite common in petrol engine vehicles fitted with aftermarket ECUs (e.g. megasquirt) so a quick Google search yields the correct circuit.
