Denmark 1991 Defender 90 200 Tdi ST Alpine White
Checked the voltage this morning - between -/+ it was 14.68 -- between + and door lock it was the same, also trying engine, feeler at the thermostat housing etc.. It should rule out earth connections.
It is the original engine - should only have done about 100.000 miles.
I did another ride this morning - outside temp is -1 degree celsius…took about 6 km to reach just below 12 o´clock.. Going down to 4 and staying at 50 mph - the needle goes to the very end of the white area! Changing to 5 and keeping 50 and the needle drops slowly - going up to 65 and it rises again….
I checked viscous coupling - it did not lock - even when the gauge was at the end of the white area? Could be related to outside temp at -1 Celsius? Suppose one could drive without a fan at that temp…
Taking of the cap of expansion caused a slight escape of air - and a little water - probably due to overfilling a bit - but no way near what was to be expected if the engine was at the boiling point…?
If I get my hands on a IR thermometer and check when the needle is high - where would be the best spot to check and what should the temp say - at least in a perfect world Smile

good thing to check also top and bottom hose on the rad you should see differential between hot at the top and low temper at bottom you can see if the rad is working Question i.e. cooling properly

By touching the top and bottom hose I can feel it works - top one is warm, not that you cannot thouch it but warm - bottom one is almost cold.. 88 Ser. 3 1980 -sold

Could the system be blocked somewhere? I drained and flushed it a while ago - then used water - and now drained again and added ordinary blue coolant 30/70, coolant/water.
When i rev. the engine and looks down in the expansion tank there is no movement - only short when I lover the revs again. 88 Ser. 3 1980 -sold

Solved
Very Happy I think problem is solved - thanks a lot for taking your time to give me advise.
As mentioned earlier i had a blown head gasket due to it getting warm. Changed head gasket but it still got to warm…
Then I changed rad. pump. thermo , visc, etc - and vent for a ride and the needle crept up to the edge of the white…and in fear of damaging the head I did not drive further.
But now I took a long ride - doing 80 -85 mph and noticed the needle stopped at the edge of the white - you can actually see the thermostat working as it moves a little bit back and forth……
It seems to me that the rad was totally wasted - that is why it got warm - after changing the rad it cools ok - but the thermostat is 88C - and that keeps the needle very high! - but stable, I just didn´t notice out of fear of damaging head again….
Saw elsewhere that some have a 82c thermo for their 200tdi… I don´t know if my gauge is calibrated to such one?

you can try taking reading at thermostat housing with you IR thermometer or the best option second probe in to the water way
and compare reading between the two

200Tdi should use an 88 degree thermostat. The normal running position of the gauge (assuming standard gauge/sender and wiring all ok etc.) is just to the left of vertical.

I would test the thermostat in a pan of boiling water to ensure it is opening at he correct temperature. The procedure for this is in the workshop manual. It's possible that it is opening too late and therefore shifting the 'operating temperature' of your engine up a bit which is causing the needle to settle higher up the range.

Measuring the actual temperature of the engine would also be a good idea as suggested above.

Hi again. Ok when i measure temperature with infrared on hoses, thermostat housing etc. the highest reading i get is around 76 C - that is when my gauge in the dash is about to leave the white area.
How does the lamp for preheat look original? On mine it is the same as a choker - not the " pigtail" normally seen in diesels.
Wondering if the dash has been changed?

Hi

This is for a 300tdi but a 200tdi is very, very, similar.

The solution to your problem could be what a lot of people do not know about including some garages and it is also a very simple solution. The 200tdi and 300tdi also have an oil cooler that is inside the radiator. This is a very important part of the cooling system. Oil is also a coolant even though its primary role is that of a lubricant. The two metal pipes approx. 10 mm in diameter that go into and out of the radiator must get hot before the coolant thermostat opens and the top rubber hose gets hot

This is controlled by a thermostat that is inside the oil filter housing.

Please find a list of parts for the repair you need for a 300tdi

ERC5923 Thermostat for oil cooler

ERC5913 O ring for thermostat oil cooler

ESR1594L O ring for oil cooler hose, as it is a little easier to remove the hose to get at the thermostat adaptor

I cannot remember if there is a spring behind the adaptor / thermostat or not( I do not think so ???) it has been a while since I did it, but as I was doing it the same time as an oil change/service I did remove the filter to give me slightly better access to the M6 adaptor bolts, but it depends if you go in from the side or from underneath

You sir deserve a knowledge prize thing I had no idea that the oil system had a thermostat.

How can you test it?

Sorry been away to India for a while but thank you so much - I will sure try to change that, going to change the oil anyway.
Will order parts in the new year and give an update when it is done.

I am bit unsure about the thermostat ERC5923 - looking at lrcat.com - it looks like the parts are the same for the 200tdi ?
Any advice before I order would be great Smile
