Can silver checker plate on side steps be changed for black

As title is there a way of changing the silver checker for black without changing the complete side steps?

I assume the chequer plate is riveted on ??? if so just drill out the rivets remove & have them powder coated/painted Do it right Do it once !!!!!

Its my first ever defender so getting use to this big meccano kit of taking things apart

I guess this is a DIY job apart from spraying?

2002 Defender 110 Td5 Black LE Java Black

Drill out the rivets and send the chequer plate off for powder coating or preferably re anodising and refit with rivnuts. The original rivets had a spacer to take into account the big thick rubber gasket.

The rivets are very long holding the checker plate on drill one out and order a few extras for spare

Start with a small bit also and work your way up to the exact size originally drilled too.

Otherwise you'd have very large holes drilled out and need huge rivets to replace.

Any swarf or bits left inside and tubing if applicable - if it rattles about just spray some internal Dinitrol inside or Waxoly and it'll stop it rattling and moving about internally.

You can't really do this job without removing the steps. You will not be able to angle the drill correctly as your sills will be in the way. Therefore, any swarf you create will be easy to remove as you will be able to take off your end caps, up end your steps and tip it out. 2002 110 td5

Hi Stacey,
I was going to powder coat my chequer plate steps after having all my satin black bits Inc the steps painted gloss black but decided against it as eventually the black would wear off on the high points of the Ali and I thought it'd look scraggy.
To remove them to have the steps painted i just drilled them carefully.
I then used rivnuts in the steps incase I want to take the chequer plate off for any reason and this all worked out OK.
Once the Ali was fitted (with greased screws) I waxoyled the steps inside as they really are pretty thin and from what I've read on here they don't seem to last !!!

Mask em up, spray etching primer, spray 4-5 coats of satin black paint, take care not to damage too much when getting in/out of the Landy, job done.
