Could be an airlock. Have you bled the system thoroughly? This could be pressurising the expansion tank and stopping the coolant circulating properly.

I think I did … but never been around a 200 tdi before. I took the plug of the radiator - filled until it ran out and put it on - worked a bit on the pipes and then I drove off !

Ive never needed to bleed a 200Tdi beyond what you have described. If the heater pipes are getting hot and top rad hose does the same once the 'stat opens I wouldn't worry about that. It shouldn't chuck anything out of the expansion tank though.
Was the thermostat a genuine part? |

no the termostat was a britpart… but it was not the one whit a ball!! it had the small vent looking like a rivet 88 Ser. 3 1980 -sold

Viscous coupling
Did you fit a new radiator cap of just fire the old one back on? It maintains a fixed pressure in the cooling system, and if does not do so it will lower the boiling point of the coolant causing it to boil and through it out the overflow. Check the heater for a blockage or by bass it by joining the heater hoses together rules out the heater matrix (or disconnect & put a hose it) Do it right Do it once !!!!! |

Christian, is your land rover originally a 200 Tdi or has it been converted perhaps using a Discovery engine.
I know the gauge is going into the red but is the engine actually overheating ? How does the overheating manifest itself other than by the gauge ? Are the gauge and sender of the correct type ? They must be of the correct type as different senders from different engines will give erroneous readings on one gauge. It is quite common that people don't change the temperature sender when they fit a Discovery Tdi engine in a vehicle with an older engine. It is not compatible with the older gauge and will read erroneously high, hence my questions regarding how you know that is overheating. I did not change the cap on the expansion - but if that was faulty does that explain the temp in the red? I will try bypassing the heater - although it works pretty good … at least for a Land Rover… 88 Ser. 3 1980 -sold

I have not checked if it is a 200 originally - but think it is strange that it stays at "normal" tmp. when going steady at 50 but when pushing it, it goes in the red..

We had the same issue with a series conversion a few months ago I used a infrared thermometer to diagnose the fault very cheap to buy might be worth investing in one Do it right Do it once !!!!! |

Check your earth straps from engine to chassis and gearbox to chassis
Check you have the correct sender for your engine - If your turbo is up high next to the rocker cover it is a proper defender 200Tdi, if instead there is a big chamber and the turbo is down underneath then it is a discovery 200tdi. If it is a discovery engine then the sender may not be matched - similarly if it is a discovery sender in a defender engine it wont help matters. When the engine is hot and running do you get any bubbling in the header tank? It should be pressurised but if it is over pressurising then it would suggest a head gasket leak/cracked head. Another way to check for head gasket problem is leave the vehicle overnight to cool.
In the morning remove the radiator cap & start engine & check for air bubbles in the radiator. Do it right Do it once !!!!! |

I have tried that - no bubbles at all. Have also pressure tested the system - nothing there. Been thinking about putting the front against a very solid wall - then having someone checking for bubbles when the engine is pushed a bit.. 88 Ser. 3 1980 -sold
