Has anyone got any hints or tips for a trip to Morocco? Initially a group of 4 vehicles now down to 1 (unreliable friends!) so now looking at an organised tour instead.
Heard go things about Way Point Tours http://www.waypoint-tours.com/ and not having to carry and sort cooking/food sounds like it would be far less hassle than taking everything myself! Any other companies recommended? |

These tours can cost serious money!! Can you read a map? Chris Scott has some fantastic books. Get hold of one of his Morocco books, buy some good maps, and go it alone. Thats what we did, and it was an incredible and satisfying experience. The money you save on a tour guide can go towards vehicle prep. Yep. Have the book and the maps but going as a lone vehicle would be a bit of a risk and a bit dull with no convoy!

We went as a lone vehicle, But I agree with your comments in relation to the risk! A convoy can be more involving and fun but we found that being a lone vehicle also has its advantages. 2006 TD5110 station wagon

hi there
just found this post don't know if its too late but we have just come back from morocco we travelled with letsoverland.co.uk, really nice people! with reference to previous comments yes you could go by your self (tom tom) even do Moroccan mapping but that would only do the tarmacked roads between the major city/towns where yes if any thing happened you would be able to get road side assistance etc , if you wanted to venture in to the more remote areas you would need some back up like sat phones or something like spot tracker plus its all the other stuff like registering your vehicle for morocco before you enter etc if you are still planning to go I will be happy to answer any questions kevin |

By arranging yourself doesn't mean "you can only do the Tarmac roads" the information is out there/on here etc and some google searches make it readily available. We didn't see Tarmac for days. I do however, agree with the comments relating to mechanical breakdown. We took lots of spares and lots of tools. We also took a lot more food and water than we needed. Morocco is a very popular overlanding destination and the tracks and routes are well travelled, we stayed on the common routes and saw plenty of friendly like minded Overlanders who all stopped and greeted us to check that everything was ok. My advice would be to read the book again, and go!! Keep smiling and enjoy it. That said, we are all different, and I do fully appreciate the reassuring feeling you would get from travelling in a group. 2006 TD5110 station wagon

I'm away to Morocco with PROTRAX in early October.
The support and social of a guided tour suits me at present and I've heard plenty of positive reports anout them, plus they're a well established company. Seems sensible for a first outing to Morocco. Good luck with whatever method you choose. |

We have travelled around Morocco twice, once a a solo trip and the second time with another vehicle. It is easy, safe and satisfying, providing that you prepare.
Paper maps are easy to get hold of, even google earth is a good planning tool. Advantages of going alone are numerous, but the main ones are: Not tied to an itinerary. Route choice. Ability to make detours/stopovers. Cost. It is a great trip and if you drive down through France and Spain a real multicultural event! |
