WINCH WIRING
Right Guys just got me new winch......What i'm after is some wiring diagrams of how you have routed the wires from the winch to the battery and what cut off switches you have used and where you got them from...and anything i should know or not do. thanks in advance Karlos Thumbs Up NEVER TAKE LIFE SERIOUSLY. NOBODY GETS OUT ALIVE ANYWAY

Ensure you use decent size power cables. 35mm2+

Isolator have a couple of possibilities. A 100 amp isolator is capable of handling up to 500 amps for short periods of time. OK for shall we say 'leisure' winching

A 200 amp isolator is about three times the price of a 100 amp isolator has 10mm studs cf 8mm studs on 100 amp isolator. It is about twice the size of the 100 amp isolator.

Have the 100 amp isolator on the 110 overlander and no problem with winching.

Thanks Brendan, it will only be leisure' winching as you say.... not doing nothing to extreme.....will the standard battery cope with this or will i need 2 or anything else ? NEVER TAKE LIFE SERIOUSLY. NOBODY GETS OUT ALIVE ANYWAY

For 'leisure' winching you certainly do not need twin batteries. You might want twin batteries and might be able to afford them but needs and wants are different things.

If you double line you halve the load on winch and the line although double the time taken for winching. You also reduce the current draw as well.

A decent battery should cope if you keep the engine revs up. If it is going to be a long winch there is nothing wrong with winching for a couple of minutes then be stationary for a few minutes revving the engine to put charge back into battery. On a single battery what you want to avoid if you are solo vehicle is discharging your starter battery so that you can not start the engine if you stall it.

David Bowyer has some good videos on winching techniques. Worth watching.


Snatch block/pulley, gloves and tree strop are all useful.


Most useful thing is probably a bucket load of common sense. SAFETY comes first, learn safe techniques!

ooooohh, get some pics up sir!

After I sort out my gay stainless a bar a winch is likely to be my first big purchase. What did you go for?

Thanks Brendan for the help and tips...i'm a little new to this sorry for all the questions i was hoping i could use my single battery...i have the snatch block / pulley and a tree strap...I'll also look at David Bowyer vids for a bit more help and understanding.

TC here is the winch i have its all sealed and pre wired so just need to connect to battery and a isolator

Bud, the cables you have might be a bit short to reach the battery, check it out before to start, nothing worse than setting the time aside on a saturday morning with good intentions and then finding out. Confused

I brought a goodwinch TDS and I needed extended cables to reach the battery box Thumbs Up

See if Goodwich can sort you out any of the extra bits you may needed, he will give you some stick for not buying his winch but I found Dave to offer outstanding service and advice Mr. Green

I took my cables running over the chasis (big cable ties) to the outside of the battery box and through the existing rubber gromet which goes in the box.

No probs mate, go to 'new retail price summary' section and see page 6 for the defender kit...

i got mine chucked in with the whole winch deal. Seams a few quid but you get a fair few cable ties, the isolator plus the connectors are already on the cables to link the cables to the isolator and to link to your the cables already on your winch. You would normally need a proper tool to do get the connectors on the Heavy duty cable. Although I think you are in the profession anyway and you may be able to do it cheaper. this is just less hassle!

Goodwinch wiring kit will provide all you need to wire it in inc isolator that would be sufficient for your needs.

David does the wires long enough to go under the front gril then up over the n/s inner arch then back down into the battery box. I ran mine from the winch straight along the top of the chassis rail n/s and then into the battery box.

One battery is more than enough as Brendan pointed out for Leisure winching. i believe EP have a low current draw anyway, not quite as low as a TDS though! Cheers
