2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 CSW Alpine White
Cam timing
Can anyone give me a bit more info on how I check the cam timing on a 2007 2.4 TDCi engine?

This is a long long long story but any workshop links/advice on how I go about checking this would be very much appreciated!

I'm on a crash course learing how to do this by myself!! It's easy taking things apart it's putting it back together again that scares me!!

Thanks in advance for any advice

Richard

Easy,
Remove the timming chain cover (not that easy)
Remove the crank shaft position / speed sensor.
Turn the engine to tdc on number 1 cylinder.
If correct the two cam gears should have window in each at either 6 or 12 o`clock (sorry used to transit / ldv engines) in to which you should be able to push a 6 mm (ish) drill bit. thru the gears into the head. That's the cams lined up.

The fuel pump gear should have a similar window to put a drill bit into. Then into the block. Pump gear lined up

Once the crank sensors out you can push a 13 to 15 (ish ) mm drill bit into the mounting hole. Then into a larger slot on the flywheel it`s self, the mounts made from ally I think. so don`t use it to lock the engine for tightening the crank pulley bolts.

Unless it`s 180 degrees out you won`t have to turn the engine over again to line all the marks up.

You can get a timming pin kit but drill bits are cheaper !! Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.
