Think I'll stick with twin cab pick up as my passenger car, Disco 5 will end up looking like the love child of a RRS and a Freelander 3. Think Land Rover is moving too far away from its original rural core customer. Don't get me wrong I like the current model range which is also great for UK employment and exports but if these models fall out of favour in Asia, USA and the Cheshire Set in the UK, Land Rover will have none of its original customer base to fall back on. It will be interesting to see what the Defender replacement will turn out like. It pains me to buy and drive a Japanese twin cab pick up as my main vehicle but currently Land Rover has nothing to compete in this segment, which has a large and growing market globally. It is a shame as with the Land Rover name and engineering expertise they are more than capable of producing a market leader in this segment which could open the door to huge global and home sales and give something back to Land Rover's original rural core customer.

I agree with the above comments but on the plus side it should keep the residual values of the D3 and D4 nice and high for current owners

Many of us D3/4 owners are anticipating that a jump of ship to the Defender replacement will be in order.

PJW, Land Rover is possibly moving away as those customers are slowly getting too old to drive anyways.
If you want to make money, you better concentrate on the new generation! |

Love child of a disco sport and range rover is about right.
Some spy shots of it here: http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1031191...-spy-shots Cant see myself driving it umpteen miles along a rally stage in rigger boots or wellies when out marshalling, slinging arrows, stakes and signs in the back when on stage set up duties. or setting up a stove and having a brew, and frying up some bacon for a butty in it either. Cant see myself launching or recovering my boat with it, putting wet boat bits, boots and an outboard in it, not to mention hosing off dog vomit or sloppy turd either. I can however imagine whole legions of them parked up outside school gates, or in the car parks at waitrose, or outside of the local cereal cafe or overpriced delicatessen Probably well out of my price range, as will be the defender replacement. Looks like its a Jap double cab for me, or hanging onto my current defender beyond when its started to play up, rot away and fall apart. |

It's an interesting connundrum and I think I could well end up being caught out in the changeover process as I'm not wjolly convinced that they will be offering a D5 Commercial.
My current Commercial is due to change in March 2017 and typical lead times would mean that i need to think about ordering the replacement in Oct '16. This is likely to be when the D5 hits the dealers (given that it is destined to be a MY17 vehicle) and, given my earlier comment about the lack of a D5 Commercial, I have been toying with the idea / aspiration that a 'new' Defender might just hit the spot... Defender, however, isn't likely to be out until MY19, ie late in 2018 and I'm one of those who are intrigued by the looks and functionality of the planned Defender. New Defender has a suspension system that is being tested on a lifted RRS at present so I am hopeful but just don't quite know how to bridge the missing year or more... Think I may end up hanging onto the current D4 Commercial for a bit longer than expected... |

I'm now running a Disco Sport as a company car for the time being (while my Jag is being built), and it's pretty good in my opinion. If you didn't know better, you'd say it was a Hyundai or a Kia or some other SUV, but it's still good none the less. I'd imagine the D5 will be the same: a nice car, but not in essence, a Land Rover. An engine to TDi for!

I made a decision this year not to trade my 3 year old D4 for a new one (still D4 of course) but to keep it and use the cost to change to get a recent/decent 110 CSW.
The D4 excels in all of the criteria I and the family value most, amongst which are being big, boxy and heavy. I don't think the D5 will be as boxy and heavy & may not even have the split tailgate (we tow horse trailers quite a lot) nor do I think I will need the other "improvements" over the D4. I saw the Discovery Vision Concept in the metal in May this year and was very impressed but I wouldn't want one any more than a FFRR or RRS BTW, the cost to change was big enough to buy a 1 yr old 110 XS CSW which, at 6k miles was hardly run in (it has loosened up and smoothed out since). Surprisingly, it has no carpets so hosing out is an option which it's not in the Disco (but you can protect the nice interior of the Disco pretty well) So I've committed to the current generation Disco and Defender and intend to keep these for the foreseeable. |

I have run a land rover product for the last 18 years of some description. D2,D3,RRS, FFRR and defender. The majority of that time i have had Defender along side one of the others
My defender is really a toy and not my family car. That would be the FFRR it's a 2011 VSE model with 32k on the clock, I was looking to change to another FFRR but the cost is just too much for a new one at 100K. so i have taken the plunge and put a deposit down for the new D5 without seeing one. One of my other reasons for this is i would like to get away from Diesel and back to Petrol I was informed that the 3L V6 super charged engine will be available for the D5. I'm hoping that i can buy one for around 55-65K we will have to wait and see. I agree with nearly all the comments about Land Rover moving away from there existing customer base and going for the sports market place but i also feel that the new DC100 will be a more than capable car that if you want to jet wash it out you will be able to buy that model. I also think they will build a higher spec car for the people that want that also. Lets all look forward to the New Defender replacement and hope it ticks all the boxes. |
