Would you swap a 90 SW E for a 110 SW S?
Hi guys, I'm currently having an offer for a used 110 SW S (first registration: 2012, 60.000km) which would cost me 35.000€ (approximately 25.000 GBP).
At the moment I have a MY90 SW E, first registration April 2015 with 16.000km which I got new from the dealer.
The dealer offered me 33.500€ for mine, which means I would have to pay 1.500€ (1.000 GBP) extra to get the 110.

Would you swap a first hand 90 for a 3.5-year old 110 for these conditions?

I do really struggle with the decision as I love my 90, but it simply doesn't offer the required space from time to time. Additionally I really fancy the look of the 110s, especially with bigger tyres on, which makes the 90 somehow look like a toy-car (no offense). My use for the Defender is mainly getting me to work every day, getting me around the mountains here in the Alps and for the 1-2 times a year going on vacation (Iceland and Morokko are on my wishlist). There are of course many upsides for the 90 as it is more agile and easier to maneuver in tight spots or around the city, but I would also like the ability to stop thinking about how many people and luggage are going to fit into it.

I'm a disco 3 owner , and have been for a few years now , but I really mis my 110 s I've had over the years and I'm thinking of going back to a 110 Thumbs Up I have never seen the point of a 90 myself , as a builder I've always needed the space Thumbs Up , I would go for the 110 Thumbs Up

I had a 90 H/T from new and loved it, for me 90's just look so good and I miss it, however it went at 4yrs old, as I needed more space and it was genuinely as good as new condition wise.
I have a 110 USW now, more comfortable, more space and more practical in the same type of use as yours.
I wouldn't worry about the age, just look at the condition, if its been owned by a careful and considerate owner(s) then there shouldn't be any issues, especially if you are buying from a dealer. Sold Def 90 HT 2010...Stornaway..(SOLD in Oct 2014)

Would I swap a 90 for a 110? Definitely not, unless I really have an urgent need for the bigger inside. If you drive mostly alone, like the handy 90 and don't want to deal with the almost never water tight rear doors, stay where you are and rent a bigger car for the little occasions you need it - my5cents. Especially in the alps, a 90 is like a mountain goat, while a 110 is more towards Hannibals elephant, sorry guys. Never forget: cars have owner, Landrover have field service personnel.

Haha, dang, you're making things not easier! Very Happy It seems like the dispute I'm having with myself runs troughout the entire Defender community.

I guess in an ideal world I would have both, a 90 as daily driver and a 110 for getting stuff and people around and of course for travelling the world. Unfortunately my financial means don't like that idea at all...

NinetyTD4, you're absolutely right with the mountain goat, especially when having to turn around on a one lane road with a cliff to one side and the mountain on the other...


If I only could tell if this one was a 90 or a 110....

Ignoring the arguments about whether the 90 or 110 is best for you, personally with those numbers I wouldn't swap. List price of a 110 is only about £2k more than for a 90 so their offer seems to suggest that your 90 has depreciated far quicker than the 3.5 year old 110, even though the 110 has much higher mileage.

If you really want a 110, sell your 90 privately and buy a 110 with cash Thumbs Up

I had a 90 SW until recently but, like you, needed the additional space, versatility and comfort of a 110... Whistle

So I went for a 110 Utility XS, although I have improved it somewhat so it is more like an upgraded SW than a Ute now... Whistle

Would I go back to a 90... Question

Not on your Hannibal Elephants nelly... Laughing

Thanks for your reply gabe. To be honest, the price I would get for mine isn't bad at all for what I've paid for it. Additionally, the 110 is a trim S (+winter-package, carpet, raid steering wheel) instead of a E which mine is...

One big plus for the 110 I reckon, is the ability to be able to sleep in it, even if it is only an emergency solution while overlanding (sleeping in a roof top tent with high winds isn't that much of a pleasure)...

I don't think I'd swap unless I was desperate, dealers will always cover charges and make in excess of 3,000 GBP across any deal. In effect you'd be losing out in the long run, the 110 to the dealer is worth around 22,000 GBP.
Sell it privately and then go back to the dealer - offer 23,500 GBP - no more.

After a bit of thinking, why swap and why not take both? You may even find a 130 to join the other two, or a nice old S1, and a S2, and a S2a, and a S3, maybe both 88 and 109, and a nice looking FC ... at what stage your misses most probably will have killed you already Wink. Never forget: cars have owner, Landrover have field service personnel.

I went the other way... 110 to 90!

I have absolutely NO regrets!

I bought my 110 after several months of pontificating between the 2. The 90 'seemed' too small for my intended use... what that was I am not sure, but as I am 95% of the time alone in my car it seemed rather an illogical choice.

I sold my 110 after 6 months (for a good profit!) and bought my dream Keswick Green 90 SW.

I had heard 'stories' that the 110 had a MUCH better ride than the 90. I notice no difference in the ride between the 2. I had visions of fitting it up with loads of kit for weeks away on the road. Given it's me, there is lots of room in the 90 with rear seats removed. I took my kids (adults!) out in the 110 for a few hours and they all complained sitting in the back of no legroom and the non reclining seats. They also could not hear me (plus side was the reverse!!)

I love the more 'nippy' feel and performance of the 90. I think it feels and looks more 'traditional'. I does everything I want of it!

So in conclusion, unless I REALLY had a reason to go from a 90 to a 110, I would stay put! Especially if the change was going to cost me or put me into an older vehicle. All IMHO of course!

We bought a MY2012 110 XS SW as my wife's everyday car six months ago and we both just love it! Yes it's like turning the titanic but other than turning circle it really is no bigger than my SAAB 93 which isn't huge. We couldn't even consider a 90 with the kids and a dog in tow, just too small but I'd go for 110 everyday.

However I wouldn't rush in to taking the Dealers offer, look around see what other 110's are available, try and find as newer, low mileage one as you can afford!

I guess you're right! Maybe outsourcing the recovery-gear-box up to the roof rack will make things a little easier for me. This year isn't obviously the best year to buy Defenders anyways if I'm looking at the exorbitant prices some people are calling.

Many years ago I got a LR accessory which was a high level wire cage. A great bit of kit which have not seen since. BOAB are also doing a high level shelf.
