Hi, after trying to decode my VIN (SALLDW....) with the workshop manual, I've found out that my MY14 Defender 90 seems to be a 90 inch Extra heavy duty one. Does anybody know what in this case "extra heavy duty" means or if there are even any standard ones (for the 90: SALLDV...) around?
Apart from the heavy duty rims, everything seems to be pretty standard to me.... |

Is it Genuine Wolf spec? Wolf's have heavy duty chassis & drive train etc aswell.. did you buy it new? My 1986 90 is currently on a full rebuild, with new chassis, Paint etc.. Very much a hybrid, TD5 Chassis, tub & bulkhead with a 200TDI and LT77 GB Painted in Stornoway Grey 2 years off the road, but getting close to completion now

Early XS Pumas had HD suspension as standard that gave a 1" lift over standard. Have you spoke to your dealer? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Jep, I've got it new from my dealer but it was already preconfigured and I highly doubt that they selected any HD specs as I would definitely have had to pay for that.
As for now I haven't contacted my dealer about it.... |

Have a look at your chassis. If it has a continuous plate welded top and bottom along the entire length then it is probably a HD version.

It should be pretty much the same for me...unfortunately I can't read the sticker anymore because of the heavy duty rust proofing

I can't read mine either anymore, thanks to rustproofing, but I'm a nerd so I photographed all of the part number stickers on the defender when I first got it.

I asked a similar question a while ago http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39672.html
The owners manual refers to HD versions in various specification tables, but as of yet I haven't got a clue what the difference is. It seems "HD" is actually "standard" at least for XS`SW. edited because link didn't seem to work, even though it looked correct? Last edited by apt100 on 28th Oct 2015 8:19pm. The topic about the vin of the 2,000,000 Defender was my reason to ask this question in the first place, too. Quite strange that they even mention the extra heavy duty in the workshop manual then. Probably another Land Rover thing we are not supposed to understand. Anyhow thanks a lot for your responses.

Mine was ordered standard as well, but came HD. Checked it and found: chassis frame with some additional strengthening, HD springs, Wolf rims - mechanics suspected it was a frame originally aimed for some kind of military use. Never forget: cars have owner, Landrover have field service personnel.

@NinetyTD4: That sounds quite interesting. Could you possibly post some information about the reinforced chassis frame in this topic: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39672-15.html
There we're currently collecting information about what the "extra heavy duty" actually means. As for now, we identified HD springs and vented front brakes as possible identification properties. |
