the tyre loses traction, but the wheel still spins as a result. So does the half shaft etc.

It is possible for the tyre to have traction but the wheel to turn inside it. Bad things happen then.

Depends how much air you have in the tyres...bane of my life when the tyres and wheels are spinning at different speeds and the valve of the tube doesn't know which way to point...
