Immobiliser Fault - 2.4 110
Hello chaps

Bought a 110 Defender XS 2.4 around 6 weeks ago and I've had some bother with the immobiliser from time to time. I've read many other threads surrounding this but my symptoms are slightly different and none of the usual quick cures seem to be working. Today, however, the car is refusing to sort itself out after having been left for 20-30 minutes (this has worked fine so far!).

Short journeys seem to be trigger for this happening. I was in Sainsburys this morning and moved from the car park to the fuel station on the way out - the car started when I left but cut out about 100 yards into my journey home and refused to start again (on a busy roundabout!). Freewheeled the car up onto the pavement and waited my usual half hour before trying to start again. Wouldn't go. The temp gauge went straight to the top, no glowplug light or oil light comes on (I get these things happening every time this occurs).

I've tried locking/unlocking, waiting on the red light going out, disconnected the battery and left it etc etc but nothing seems to be sorting this out. Sadly unable to lay my hands on a diagnostic tool at least until Tuesday.

Any clues anyone??

The symptoms:

are not typical of an immobiliser fault.

Your symptoms are more likely a faulty supply or earth connection - there are earth connections on the top of the bulkhead - check these for tightness. Did you check the main relay? (rearmost one under the driver seat). Also check the wiring loom at the rear of the engine for chafing.

Thanks Fifth Horseman

I realise the gauge and lights are not symptomatic, but I'd assumed it was immobiliser related given the grief I'd had previously and the fact it only seems to occur after very short journeys.

I shall check the bulkhead and under the seat tomorrow as I'm now at work until midnight.

Many thanks for the speedy reply.

Welcome to the forum, can you answer the following questions for me?

What year is the Puma?
When the temp gauge goes into the red does the rev counter drop to zero and does the battery light also illuminate?
Is there anything plugged into the OBDII socket?

The fault may be with the IPAC, 10AS or the EMS depending on the year of the Puma. When you plug in a diagnostic tool do a DTC search of the IPAC and see if a dtc for losing comms with the 10AS or the EMS is logged. And post here if you would be so kind any DTC's, tested or untested that that are logged in the IPAC and EMS modules, cheers. Thumbs Up

Hi Lorryman100

Thank you for the welcome - I shall post in the welcome section with some photos when I'm not at work and have more time.

What year is the Puma? It's a 2008
When the temp gauge goes into the red does the rev counter drop to zero and does the battery light also illuminate? Temp gauge goes into red when I put the ignition on to try to start it. The battery light comes on but no oil or glowplug light.
Is there anything plugged into the OBDII socket? Not next to the car just now so can't answer that one.

I'll try checking the earths/relays etc under the seat tomorrow. If that doesn't make her start, I shall get hold of the diagnostic tool on Tuesday and do some further investigation.

Many thanks for your reply.

Thank you once again Lorryman.

Having scanned that little lot, it would seem the earthing issue/relay-wiggling might just be the answer. Failing that, diagnostic time.

Much appreciated!

Make sure that the relays under the driver's seat are really tight in their sockets. It should be quite hard to pull one out. Very often either or all are not tight, and if the main and ignition relays are poorly connected you're likely to get exactly the symptoms you describe.
