Cooling system questions+oil
Hello all, I'm new here, there doesn't seem to be a newbie section, so i'll just crack on with asking my question.

I have been tasked with getting my Mothers TD5 Defender sorted after a head gasket failure-thanks to years of cowboy mechanics doing half arsed jobs (only has 50k on the clock). The head has been sent to engineers for skim and pressure test.

I have ordered a boat load of parts from turner engineers, but before I hemorrhage any more money on this I wanted to see where I can get a decent but not overly pricey radiator and maybe inter cooler too.

So far rimmber bros comes up as the best, but I'm open to suggestions-preferably reliable long lasting units.

Also can the TD5 thermostat housing be opened up and just the thermostat replaced?

How much coolant and Oil (also viscosity rating) do I need and where's best to source these from too?

Any other hints and tip appreciated, I'm using a Japanese performance specialist for the job, just because he's a good friend and I can trust him to do it right, but it's a learning process for us both, hopefully by the end he'll be a defender specialist too Smile

Thanks

Doesn't matter I managed to find the time to research it all and order all the parts.

Used Advanced Factors since I saw it flashing up on the advert strip, so I suppose being on the forum helped..sort of.

There are loads of people that have had intercooler upgrades. Perhaps sticking an advertisement up in the 'For Sale and Wanted' thread may yield you the parts you need in decent condition and at a very reasonable price? Very methodical with the lay out and numbering of the parts.

Thumbs Up If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

Thanks K9F, yep as I said I'm new and haven't had much time to familiarise myself with the forum. However I wanted all new parts as this has turned into a big overhaul of our 90. There are way more suppliers than I first thought, much easier to source parts as-well, I used to be massively into off-roading scene a few years ago, but city life has altered my vehicular interests.

It's been a steep learning curve. I'm mainly used to petrol engined cars-specifically Jap ones, so getting back into Landrovers again was a bit weird, but fun. As for the methodical layout, that's Barry's methodology, very good mechanic, wouldn't take my cars anywhere else now. Also the best thing about his garage is it's aimed at enthusiasts who want to learn how to work on their own cars. https://www.facebook.com/southcoastworkshop/

The head has just returned from the engineers today, so hopefully it will all start going back together soon. Then it's a case of re-fabricating a new rear cross member, to eliminate the rot that set in around the back end.

Will try and get enough photos for a little build thread. having seen spectre the other day, I think I have some aesthetic goals to aim for on the defender, once all the mechanical bits are in good order. Mind you my wallet my need a breather before that....
