Just take off the calliper and unbolt the whole unit pulling it out with the half shaft attached. 20 minute job.

As said take off the calliper and then undo the ring of bolts pulling the full assy including drive shaft out then you can swap on a bench, remembering to clean the disk of any oil on assembly.
The REME method was only do-able on the DAF 4t as it was a rubber seal only, the Land Rover one has a spring incorporated so can't be cut. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html 90 V8 - Maggie http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic42564.html 110 TD5 - Buggsy http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic59029.html 52HG25 lightweight https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72342.html D3 Hse - Fiona Capri 2l S - Anna Think I might have a problem............ |

Another point I use a 14mm ring spanner with half of the ring removed as it grips the bolts once they have been cracked off a lot better than an open end. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Haha I have never tried it and happy to do it properly on mine, as for the spanner you can get one in and a ratchet one fits great but once the blots are undone they butt up on the swivel housing and you can't removed the ring end without winding it back in.
Don't forget to replace the paper gasket on the swivel/axle joint on re-assembly (a job card can be cut lovely and will do a perfect job.....that's a nice REME trick) 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html 90 V8 - Maggie http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic42564.html 110 TD5 - Buggsy http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic59029.html 52HG25 lightweight https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72342.html D3 Hse - Fiona Capri 2l S - Anna Think I might have a problem............ |

I've done it using the splitting method years ago but by either carefully removing the old seal spring or unwinding the join in the new spring and then rejoing it again once it's ready to go back in the new seal. Steve.
