Some off-road sites (payed for) will not let you on unless you have a CB, so that you can call for help and to let them know you location

CB is pretty much dead nowadays... It was absolutely massive in the 80's, half of my school had a CB and the estate I grew up on (read-council/rough) looked like a military listening station with the amount of aerials on houses...actually good times were had and real friendships grew from them.

I use the CB for laning trips and they very much make the trip more enjoyable, very funny banter, but also for warning each other of walkers attitudes, oncoming trail bikes, diffcult sections etc etc.

I wouldn't be without one, though it never gets switched on for any other reason than laning. Even truckers don't have cb's anymore.

We NEVER use handles, 10-codes or anything else. A newbie who we took laning the other week actually used the phrase 'Roger'.....someone quickly asked "who the Censored is 'roger'"!!! Laughing

I wouldn't put any hope in anyone answering to a mayday call, though as a last resort, it might be worth a try.

In all seriousness some of us at one time may require assistance to be rescued and I am afraid a CB radio will not cut it, so do not ever rely on one for that purpose.

Mobile phones are far more reliable, however there are places where mobiles cannot get a signal, though more often than not even if you cannot get a lock for a voice call it's always worth trying to send a text, as this can be done on a much weaker connection. You can either send a text to a friend or relative or, with the new 'EmergencySMS' service, send one to 999. The service is designed primarily for deaf and speech-impaired people, but there is no bar on using it to call for rescue from remote places. To be able to send a text to 999 you need to register your phone in advance. Simply by sending an SMS message to 999 you can call for help and the emergency services will be able to reply to you.

You will need to register your mobile phone before using the emergency SMS service do this here, http://www.emergencysms.org.uk/registering_your_mobile_phone.php you never know by registering one day it may save your life.

Also and this unfortunately is a little known fact you can also call 112 which will place an emergency call anywhere in the world, including in the UK. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Gilarion, would you mind if I quoted your post on a couple of other forums/Facebook pages..? The EmergencySMS service is something I hadn't heard about and I think others may be interested to learn about it.

cheers

this is quite interesting but I notice from the website:

Registering

Q.
Do I have to be deaf to register?

A.
No, the service is for people who cannot make voice calls because they have a hearing loss or a speech impairment.

is there some other guide on this?

^^^^ I see this service as a last resort if you cant make a voice call for any reason. Sending a TXT message can sometimes get through when a voice call cant.

I've registered, but hope to never use it, but better to have it just in case.

Just my 2c worth....

cheers

for sure out here in Norway the T-bane ( metro or underground ) has numbers on the walls of the carriages that you can text if you are under threat or need to report something without actually speaking to the emergency services. It works and I saw it used when a guy making a nuisance of himself was picked up a couple of stops down the line without any confrontation for the 'reporter'

which was handy as the guy was about to be dealt with by a few of us normal passengers Wink

so I can see the benefit, particularly with the abysmal service level we get as customers of the UK mobile operators but I just wonder what the emergency sms service provider feels about this use.

Good point re: the use of the system. I guess they need a certain critical mass to keep it going, but don't want to get swamped with demand.

Given that this thread is the first I've heard of the service, I'm guessing its not widely known about...?

cheers
