Diesel Additives and Oil Additives..... Thoughts?
I have a MY07 Defender, I have some Liqui Moly Super Diesel Additive and Oil Additive. I was just wondering if they are worth using? Can they damage anything?

I'm a new owner so I'm trying to d the right things. I've just done a complete exchange of all fluids.

Hi expatRob,

Using additives has proven to work. I use Forté Diesel conditioner every 2000ish Km and Forté Turbo cleaner every 3000km. Using it once a year won't do anything, you gotta use it on a regular basis. Keeps all internals clean which expands the lifetime of your engine and makes it run more efficient. One off the biggest benefits though is it eliminates algae from forming in the diesel tank. Oil additives I'm not to sure, when you do some research on them they seem to work very well however i'll just stick with high quality oils.

Algae in diesel tanks? What is all that fuzz about here regularly? Over the years I have owned many diesels myself, and today I know, as we all do, a gazillion diesel drivers, and I never ever heard about any such problems. I also do not know anybody who uses such additives these days. Is this maybe a Defender diesel tank specific problem again? Shocked
My dealer surely is very clear on this, the Puma engine is made to run on diesel, nothing else is needed. The SVX never had any problems with diesel fuel alone for close to 80k km now, but admit, for many years I use exclusively BP Ultimate diesel with zero biodiesel content. Thumbs Up
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Stick an endoscope in your diesel tank and see for yourself mate, diesel algae is an issue affecting all diesel vehicles, there is a reason there are companies designated to flush diesel fuel systems. However you will only get affected by the issue when you run your tank dry and the algae forming on top of the diesel enters the filter. BP Ultimate (which I run as well) pretty much has the same affect as additives and this hosts several additives as well.

Every diesel engine is designed to run on diesel, such is the human body designed to run on water, does not mean you do not function better when adding some beer. Same counts for additives. The engine does not need it, but will sure help the engine stay clear from diesel sludge etc.

quick note, just because you never experienced an issue first hand does not mean it is non existent Wink

Shocked Ik kan je één ding vertellen, ik functioneer zeker niet beter op Heineken dan op water. Laughing You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Only place I have heard of it being an issue, and then it was a very expensive issue, was with the emergency diesel generators located on offshore gas platforms. Engines were only run extensively during annual shutdown and so diesel stayed in tanks for many months.

Diesel additive
I have used Liqui Moly Diesel fuel additive x 2 tank fulls and the engine is running much smoother. Thanks everyone for your input.

Contractor came into our office today and informed us that his diesel car has just passed 200,000 miles on the odometer. It runs on whatever brand of diesel is available when he needs it, gets a regular oil/filter change and is as economical now as it was with 20,000 miles on the clock. He doesn't use any additives or special treatments - so I think I'll follow his lead.

Whatever suite you.

I've worked out it's cheaper for me to put in Shell super dooper (whatever the silly go faster name is) than supermarket fuel.

Sounds like an old car built before 2000 ... they have been robust indeed.

I could recommend Millers: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Millers-Oils-Die...xyJX1TF1Ru
Opie is a forum sponsor with discount too.

Boosts power, smoothness and gives everything a good clean though especially the injectors.
I don't use it all the time, though you can, but I was surprised how good it was.

Just a bit of a pain to do every time you fill up but hey ho.

EDIT **** APOLOGIES WRONG LINK ADDED ORIGINALLY.
