chassis is dated near side look through wheel arch, might give you a clue
2016 my have black headlining ? older ones a lighter colour although if you are that worried about that amount of rust Im not sure if its the vehicle for you  |

Ha ha  - been there, done that - cutting the rear half chassis and bulkhead outriggers of the 88" on the driveway in the piddling rain and welding in new pattern replacements - don't fancy that again in a hurry...!
It's more of a principal thing, really - I bought it knowing it's likely to brake down at some point, but quality of finish on a known weak point ought to be something they got right after 67 years....  Admittedly, I could just sort it out myself, but it cost enough in the first place that it ought not to have happened, and If it's like this from new what'll it be like in 5-10 years (this ones a keeper ) when the warranty is up? Rather flag it up with LR now so it's documented from the off.
Thanks for the heads up on the date codes - will take a look before I head out in the morning. Regarding the headlining, it has a black liner but I assumed this was an option? Cheers, David |

TO QUOTE THE DEALER "THEY ARE ALL LIKE THAT SIR" MINE WAS! your choice is to complain and get it touched up as its not delivered fit for purpose........but defender owners just put up with this poor workmanship and usually apply anti rust and cover in wax of choice!..get some acf under cappings and acf the air condition brackets behind the grill if they are not brown now give it a couple of weeks!Defender ownwrship should be given a name !i would call it "Rust Watch"you either get used to it or end up selling on! |

Regarding 15/16 model year, look at your VIN. It is in the windscreen lower corner tag, or on the V5 which is in the warm
If it ends FA456789 or similar (the important bit is "F") it is 2015MY If it ends GA567890 or similar it is 2016MY Black headlining is not a 16 model year feature, it was introduced at 15 model year. There seems to be no difference between 15 and 16 model year except when they were built.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Thanks for the replies, both.
Nitram - will have to do the cappings, guess I got too used to having the galvanised cappings on my older 'girls'... ACF50 is a good product (used it a lot on aircraft) in terms of vaporisation and therefore spread / coverage, but found that it can evaporate away leaving little residue - CorrosionX would probably be my preferred choice. If its any consolation mine was just like that when I bought it four years ago. And it was straight from the factory ie not hanging around at a dealers. Last week I crawled underneath with a torch and had a good look around. The tiny bit of rust I saw would indicate I'll be long gone by the time its a problem. No dinitrol or waxoyl either. I put it down to salt - or rather lack of it. Here in rural Ireland minor roads are never salted and thats where it spends most of its time. Its a keeper though so some form of treatment would be a nice but not essential. Even the rear cross member looks decent. I think the exhaust is on the way out though but hey four years, not bad

I think they are pretty much all like that, re the engine there are loads of bare steel bits, Zag the chassis and body, ACF50 the bare engine and axle parts makes a massive difference. Mine is now 4 yrs old and is like new in these areas done from new in about 6 hrs by myself, having seen other peoples I think the clear wax looks best underneath but not sure if it protects as well. Welcome aboard... 
1. I would venture that you have exactly what numerous others before you have taken delivery of. 2. Yours may be slightly worse if it has 'stood around' between its cancelled order and you, but I doubt this amounts to much time. 3. You are right though, principle says Land Rover should send a Defender out the door in a better condition. (I recently looked closely at a 110 double cab in a Land Rover showroom, with 2 miles on the clock, and it too had rust 'spot' marks and what looked like handling / assembly scratches that had started rusting slightly on the chassis under the wheel arches). 4. Plan A talk to Land Rover and see what they will do to rectify what you have. 5. Plan B convert the rust that's there with a good product (FE 123 for example) and Dinitrol the underside. 6. Not sure if I'm heartened or disappointed to hear others have experienced this... Anyhoo, the Lease company has spoken with the supplying dealer and Land Rover - apparently someone will be calling me, though nothing yet. Will update as and when I hear anything. Cheers, David |
