TD5 Getting difficult to engage 2nd gear when cold...
My 2002 TD5 90 CSW has done 68k miles. When its cold, its very difficult to get it into 2nd gear from first, and also difficult from 3rd to 2nd, and 2nd to 1st. 3 & 4 & 5 are perfect up and down all the time.

Once it has warmed up it is much better, but always stiffer to get 1 & 2 than any of the other gears.

It seems to be getting much worse over the last few weeks,

The car was serviced about 1k miles ago, with all oils changed. Clutch seems fine.

Is there anything that I can easily check? 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

My old box used to be like that and using the difflock fully synthetic oils sorted it. Only other thing I can think of checking is that clutch is adjusted correctly and is not dragging. When new oil fitted the improvement was gradual and took a few miles to have effect.

Make sure the right oil was used in the gear box as I had a D2 TD5 and a garage put normal gear box oil in it and I had to drain it out and put ATF back in as this is what this gear box should of had as had the same problem, once done it was better but the damage was done really Rolling Eyes

Use the right oil in R380 manual gearbox - LR specification is MTF94 oil, not ATF oil (the specification changed long time ago). Your description looks like too thick oil is in gearbox - probably the same like in the transfer box.
MTF94 is more like 10W-40 engine oil than gearbox oil.
Years ago, when I bought my Disco2 the gear change was not smooth, after changing the oil to the specified one, it has improved a lot. And don't wait too long, this gearbox has it own oil pump inside. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂ­nek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

First / second always has the potential to be a clunker on the R380, I've had two D2s and a 300tdi Def and they've been the same. Have a read on the Ashcroft site, it's mentioned there and be a bit more deliberate when going into second if you know what I mean. This time of year I double declutch until it warms up, seems to help. Only use genuine MTF.

Agree with using correct oil as specified by LR.
Mine is the same but once warm is much better. I am not going to bother doing anything apart from genuine oil as I have got used to it now Wink

Ok thanks folks. I have no reason to suspect it has the wrong oil in, it was serviced by Landranger in Stockport, who have always done the servicing since I have had it, and I doubt they would make such a basic error. I will ask though.

Clutch drag might be the answer, I have noted that the pedal feels a little 'creaky' in its action if you know what I mean. I'm going to check the condition of the fluid, and pump some fresh stuff through. I suppose the slave could be about to let go. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

My MY02 does it as well, 1st to 2nd when cold. But fine as soon as it warms up. 2002MY Defender 90 H/T

Thanks Andy, I will check it out.. Hows the D3 going?

This morning it was a lot warmer than the previous mornings (11 degrees) and the gearchange was much better, and I have not done anything yet. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

D3 is a hole different league. Should never have sold my Td5, and certainly shouldn't have touched a Tdci.

I wouldn't worry about your box being tight whilst cold, it's just showing its character. I used to used the fully synthetic with a couple of additives and all good.

I always noticed that any changes were slow to react, it was never instant.

Might be worth doing a couple of changes fairly soon after one and other if you find its had the wrong fluids in- did this on a disco a few years ago having found it had been filled with the wrong fluids to try and remove any contamination.
