United Kingdom 2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Zambezi Silver
OK, first up is the link to the selection of photo's I provided to illustrate the story, then the article as I wrote it.

The iconic ‘Defender-style’ design is destined to be consigned to the pages of history when its continuous run of over 67 years ends.

From the story of Maurice Wilks and his brother making a sand drawn design on the beach of Red Wharf Bay, Anglesey in 1947 to its current day status as the enthusiasts 4x4 of choice. It seemed appropriate that enthusiasts took the story back to where it all began.

Defender2.net, led by Skip, Dirk, Richard and Jaro, conceived the idea of gathering Land Rover owners for a nostalgic get together at the spiritual birthplace of this iconic vehicle.

The idea developed, and owners with some special and unique variants, signed up to be part of the event. Add to this a very accommodating Marine Officer (John Owen and the beach was ours for the day.

We started with a safety briefing, crucially including the times we should vacate the beach or risk becoming stranded - more on that later!

Land Rovers made the pilgrimage from as far as Holland, from extreme off roaders to ultra ‘posh’ SVX models.

For me personally, this was Daddy/daughter adventure weekend. My daughter camped with me on Anglesey ready for the event. I bored her to tears with stories of Maurice’s sand design and it seemed apt to find her doodling away, although poor Maurice would not approve of some of her extra features?

We made a little bit of time so that boys could be boys playing in the surf and then made to vacate the beach.

Amongst the vehicles, was an amazing Ranulph Fiennes 110, readied for an expedition, which was eventually cancelled. When the owner followed a local’s advice of a ‘challenging’ beach exit, little did he know he was heading for his own adventure!

The route proved ill-advised and with the 110 bogged over its axle’s, even a tractor couldn’t recover him as the fast-paced tide came in. There was just time to disconnect batteries and give it half a chance of survival. As it disappeared beneath the waves, not only did we feel for the unfortunate owner, it truly felt like the end of something special.

The story does not end there! The tidewaters receded and it seems this special edition was special indeed and waterproofed like no Defender I have known. After hours of jet washing and many cans of WD40 she lived, at least long enough to get the vehicle back for an already planned restoration.

So as rumours circulate of the Defender being built elsewhere, just maybe, much like the 110 we thought had been lost to the sea, just maybe the Defender will rise again someday?! Check out my YouTube channel for green laning and Land Rover "how to" videos.
