Except that this was faked!!! (The car was pulled up the dam by a large winch at the top rather than winching itself up!)

Judging by the depth of the water on the shots looking back down the dam, it was also lowered down too!

Still a great advert though.

I was just pointing out that Hammond/Top Gear were trying to recreate the advert with winching equipment (although not standard by any means) on board the Land Rover rather than faking it with a winch at the top of the dam like Land Rover did.

I thought it was interesting that Hammond was clearly absolutely petrified during the filming of his dam ascent (and I can sympathise). The emotions really didn't appear faked.

Similarly when he was dumped on a mountain in BC in order for Clarkson and May to have an excuse to behave like hooligans in the Ford F-150 Velociraptor and the other ugly thing, he l;ooked genuinely mad as hell. I don't think that was faked either.

I know, thank you though Very Happy.

To be honest, installing an extra engine in the rear to power a much stronger winch on the front could also be interpreted as faking it!!

Sorry, I was referring to the Land Rover ad being faked as opposed to the Top Gear version mate Thumbs Up

I agree, it could be considered faking it, but the idea was for the vehicle to power its own ascent, which the original didn't, and the prgramme was honest to the extent that it pointed out that it was actually a wholly impossible feat for any standard Landrover to make that climb without extensive modifications (in fact I doubt that there hasever been a vehicle bult - certainly not a production vehicle - whcih could gat up a dam of that size without extensive modifications).

Let's face it, it wasn't really about honestly recreating a Landrover advertisement, it was simply an outrageous challenge or stunt to make good TV and to highlight the 'news' element - the demise of the Defender. In that, it worked pretty well.

Yes, I realise that! Sorry if my comment was not clear - there was no intended connection between your comment and mine - I was just recollecting how I enjoyed Hammond's obvious discomfort!

I completely agree! This was what I was trying to say with my first post.
