That happen to me years ago on an old turbo diesel. I think it was the lay shaft in the box. But could just be the linkage is stuck.
Could always search the web about transits as it's the same box. |

Is it facing up to down the driveway, It may just be the stress on the transmission (due to the steep driveway) that's stopping you from moving the gear lever..
if you're facing down the drive way I would check it's safe and let the hand brake off and roll down onto somewhere a bit more horizontal and try again, if its steep enough it should overcome the compression of the engine, or you can always dip the clutch. If you're facing up the hill I would keep the hand brake on, turn the key to start while pulling back (not too hard) on the gear lever without pressing the clutch, this should move the gears enough to pull it out of gear. in both instances I would keep one foot over the brake and one hand on the keys, facing up the hill be ready to turn the engine off if it starts. My 1986 90 is currently on a full rebuild, with new chassis, Paint etc.. Very much a hybrid, TD5 Chassis, tub & bulkhead with a 200TDI and LT77 GB Painted in Stornoway Grey 2 years off the road, but getting close to completion now |

Hi, no doubt you might have tried this but if not, depress clutch and start engine with foot on brake!! and gently tease the gearstick into neutral, you have not mentioned what gear your in I think?
Had this problem myself and it was just that the weight of the vehicle was stopping it, do not force it out as it will damage the selectors and forks. I tried lifting the transfer box stick out of gear but the same problem, weight on the selectors and forks so that dont work either.. It should come out if engine started but as Browny90 says be prepared to turn off toot sweet if it leaps forward. Hope this helps Regards Ole Dave |

The problem is that the 1/2 selector rail has jumped and jammed it in 1st, can be fixed without stripping the gearbox, Call me at 8am UK time tomorrow and I will talk you through it, Dave Dave |

sorry for massive delay in coming back to this as we are in the middle of japan on holiday with limited internet access...
have 5 days in HK and then back home to dust off the garage crawler...interested in your post ashtran and hope i can rectify without major hassle...didn't mention before that getting down to the street has a reversing manoeuvre in the middle...thanks landrover 60 ft turning circle.... thanks to eveyone for imput and suggestions, here's hoping the fix will be easy..! On another point last night i bumped into computer programmer from Landrover uk...he specialises in the bodywork section...wouldn't give much away after i asked him if he was in charge of panel gap calibration robot....he was drinking alone ........ thanks Oledave too dDef is sitting on a pretty level spot at the top of drive so not too much strain on box...the stick appears to be in N pos but the box is in 1st...clutch works but that's it and can select no other positions using gear shift. I had started her from outside vehicle after checking N, car jumped forward and stalled in 1st. I'm not sure I properly selected N and this may be what contributed to fault? sianora untill next week |

Hey everyone
back home and about to get investigating gearbox problem...1st gear didn't magically release unfortunately have got a little more info from websites and it seems I am not the only person to have caused this issue.. One owner of similar 90 also started his from outside and suffered the same fate as myself....I'm getting convinced it's the detent issue which was fixed by transmission replacement when under warranty but there is a detent kit available now as a service item. It would look like anyone with a 90 around the same year as mine would probably be advised to fit the new (stiffer) detent kit before getting stuck in gear. I have not removed detent in situ before and am hoping to give it a go later today...fingers crossed..... |

Happened to mine last year. Vehicle in left in gear and handbrake off while mechanic inspected underneath while rocking too and fro. Result-stuck in gear

maddening stuff but at least the mechanic was under it so how did he go about fixing it? I have spent today getting intimate!! with my 2010 def 90 and here is what I found, with many thanks to ashtran from this forum for confidence building .... After removing the floor mats and and sound deadening I then removed gearstick assembly and turret housing to get to the top detent (vertical position to left of gear stick). This was when I should have been able to remove friction fit detent by tapping with a fine chisel but the detent had been driven deep into casing ....Got it out by carefully drilling a small pilot hole in the centre and screwing in a hex head screw. Detent then comes out easily now you have some purchase on it.. Detent looks like a 9mm shell casing with spring inside. Ball bearing is still in the casing at this point and must be removed to allow you to flick the selector rod into N.....Da Da... now gearbox is in N and you can easily check by having wheel off the ground. On examining the dimensions of both detent and spring only 2-3 mm of spring extends outside the detent when in the gearbox so perhaps this isn't putting enough pressure on the ballbearing as it interacts with selector shaft? Perhaps this is why the detent was pushed in too far on assembly??? Own up LR.....? I have made a spacer for the inside of detent (5mm) and reused detent casing by capping it with the same 10mm hex screw with a high temp rated grommet cap....will see how that goes over the next few weeks but I made a fair job of it Refitted everything, tested and all systems go Tips: didn't have a fine magnetic probe to remove ballbearing so used suitable size drinking straw!! Think hoover advert and you'll get it but make sure the straw dia is smaller than the ballbearing???? As ever a 60 min job takes all day but used the excuse to clean up areas not normally got at ...greased every linkage I could see ....used 2 cans of lanolin spray....all electrical connections proofed......4 beers..... |

here are a few shots I took as I went about this detent issue...previous info in the thread should fill in the blanks..... anything else just give me a shout on this thread ....there isn't a lot of info out there on this issue...ashtrans on this forum was the only guy with any knowledge that I could find.....
