was I dreaming?
not only did I think that I'd read somewhere on here that the 2011MY defender had 4 side lights (ie side lights and main head lights with a side light) but I thought I'd seem mine as such.
anyhow i specifically had a look the other day.....
I must have been dreaming?
cant help but think it would look good though?

now where's the doctor.

On the commercials it seems when you turn the side lights on the side lights like up, then the headlights light up pretty dimly too. Looks sort of like a dodgy earth somewhere.

My old 300Tdi did it, and so does the Puma. No idea why!

It's called dim-dip, and is a hare-brained Euro initiative that briefly became a UK requirement. I don't know why some Defenders (commercial models) still have it, when others (the 'soft' models) don't, but it is utterly, utterly pointless (rather like rear fog lamps which, as we all know, cause more accidents than they prevent)!

The good news is that it takes about 3 minutes to disable the dim-dip feature.

Ooo!! How! I fair want to get shut of it. I think it looks daft the way the headlamps slowly light up. It's like a dodgy pantomime's stage lights.

Yep my Hard top has dim dip, haven't got round to disabling yet but might do it when I finally get round to fitting some SVX style LED sidelights as it will definitely look wrong then.

Instructions to get rid of it here

The resistor pack is located under the offside front wing and to disable the dim dip all you need to do is unplug the connector fromm the pack. It is tricky to see and reach, and a small mirror may help. It is actually about 6" in front of the aerial towards the headlight, inside the wing, where the flat wing top panel joins the inner wing, partly hidden by the air intake ducting.

It might have been possible to find a more inaccessible place for it, but I doubt it!

Shocked
now I'm really confused. when I looked at them last time I thought the little bit of light was simply a reflection off the seperate side lights - I'll have to have ANOTHER look (proper look this time).

Hi - I've just bought some new headlights with clear lenses from Bol on Bits and some Extreme Brilliance bulbs from Halfords.

I thought the defender used H4 bulbs so bought the H4 lights and H4 extreme Brilliance...

Now looking at the manual it says the bulbs are H7????

Please help!! and which one is right?

Thanks,
James

H7 are, I believe, single filament bulbs. You are correct the latest handbook states H7. However, I have just changed my bulbs for H4 Extreme Brilliance from Halfords, Dual filament High/Dipped Beam bulbs.

ALL the eBay listings for Defender Headlamp Bulbs are for H4 bulbs.

Very interesting. Extract from Wikipedia :- More recent single-filament bulb designs include the H7 (55 W @ 12.0 V, 1500 lm ±10% @ 13.2 V Confused Confused Confused

Definitely compared with the standard bulbs. Have also changed all the Brake/sidelight/reverse and rear fog to LED replacement bulbs. Haven't changed the indicator lights as would need a different relay.
