Like so many other things they thought they were too big and clever to be caught out. And even now you could have a fairly safe bet that it won't really stick. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

 and VW road tax should go up by the same amount and VW company should by find 1/2 its net profits for the last tax year
Apparently, tests are predictable and the computer can work it out. The car then temporarily switches on a system to cut emissions, making the engine as much as 40 times cleaner, according the regulator. So why did VW cheat? The benefits are complicated and vary depending on the car, but I am told that switching the emissions controls off can potentially increase fuel efficiency, and save the driver from having to maintain the system by topping it up with a chemical.  |

Fiddling like this has been going on for years.
In saloon car racing in the mid 1980's some turbo cars had a micro switch on the bonnet that, when opened, re-set the chip that controlled the turbo boost so when the cars were scrutinized they only just made the maximum bhp they were allowed. In the race boost pressures where increased giving more power. When checked again after the race on the rolling road, the bonnet micro switch reset the boost pressures! Cheers Don. |

Car emissions testing (type approval, not MOT) used to be done with the bonnet up, there are allegations that some manufacturers used to enable a low-emissions calibration when the bonnet was open   1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

VW almost certainly won't be the only manufacturer to have been doing this. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it comes out that the other big German manufacturers have been doing the same. I'm surprised that it's taken this long for someone to discover that some underhand tactics have been going on in fuel economy / emissions testing. The official figures are so far off real world figures. This has always been blamed on the testing process being very different to real world driving, but it seems that is not the only reason! 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

I reckon this is the tip of the iceberg but how far will the search be to see what other manufacturers are up to?
Take fords claims on the fuel economy for the 3cyl Ecoboost there is countless owners out there who's cars get no where near the claimed MPG. In my eyes it is all down the test they do and the manufactures knowing just how to make it's own cars look and perform just for it. How about the dynamics for an MOT style emissions test? If the car can see no speed signal, no gear selected, combined with say the bonnet open then all it takes is for the ECU to choose a very lean mapping in the assumption that it is being tested. Nothing concrete just my own speculations. |

Reading that Martin Winterkorn will get voted out on friday. I can imagine that he is up personally for legal prosecution in USA. Would not like to stand in his shoes right now.

I remember back in the day when the Metro was released it came with an induced misfire at idle, this was to get it through the emissions test on the MOT. The misfire brought down the CO reading quite dramatically but pushed the HC readings through the roof. HC allowance as far as I can remember was 1200 ppm so it would pass this easily. It would be interesting to know what they would've done to get the A series engine to perform efficiently if the VED was calculated then the same as today.
