Think I Have Found The Coolant Loss Fault :(
Hi Guys,

Today I set about doing the coolant flush- followed the instructions to the letter and then cleared up and took her for a quick spin to get some diesel.

Once I had got my diesel I came onto the drive and opened the bonnet to check to see if there were any leaks or the coolant level had dropped again.

I noticed a very hot smell and the oil filler cap was steaming a bit, so I opened it and inadvertently opened a can of worms.

Oh bother.

So, this to me indicates 2 things.

1. Its definitely unhappy Big Cry

2. There must ether be a tappet not sealing properly or a coolant leak which is now venting into the rocker cover space

So, what do I do?

I don't really want to drive it, especially if it is any further than from my house to the garage to work on it -if that far!

What preventative measures can I take to limit any further damage?

Any possible causes?

Could this be the cause of the coolant loss? Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

First thing I would be doing is a compression test, looks like you have a head or head gasket problem
other than stripping it to do the head.......... stick 2 tubs of k seal in it (with clean water no antifreeze)
It has worked twice before for me and it failed on another (but my head had 3 cracks in it when I stripped
it, not defenders but hilux surfs.

K seal small blue bottle with an orange cap Thumbs Up

Thanks trigger.

I think its head off and inspection time for me. I have never been a fan of things like radweld as they seem to be more of a "get out of trouble quick fix" rather than a proper fix.

I will do some ringing around tomorrow as what I need is ether workshop space (and time) to do it or a really good quote from somewhere to do it.

I'm just hoping it is a simple fix and nothing too serious like broken piston rings or cracked head Sad Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

I wish I had a proper workshop I could work in Big Cry

The whole process dosn't phase me at all, what causes me worry is leaving my 110 out on the drive with its engine in bits open to the elements working by torchlight Sad Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

Haha, 200Tdi class locomotive Rolling with laughter

Water pump is good, timing belt shouldn't need doing and as I don't have to go in that end I don't want to open up too much otherwise it will turn into a full engine rebuild- which would be fine if I had somewhere to store it but currently I don't....

Actually, thats a lie. I can rebuild the engine ok, what I can't do is have a dead 110 on the drive Shocked Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

I did everything to my old 300tdi outside etc. I'd put a smear of grease around the block face and 'stick' cling film over and never had an issue. Head went for a skim for a couple days, when back took cling film off, cleaned up grease and all was well. Mine had the normal 'chuffing' from the rear of the head.

Cling film has many uses even though it's a real PITA!

I'd do a compression test and it's nice and simple on TDi's! That should reveal all. Then maybe a leak down depending on results!

Don't bother testing anything. It's only going to tell you what you already know ---- off with its head !!

The head is coming off no doubt about that Thumbs Up

Its what I find when I take it off which worries me Big Cry

I am hoping and praying that it is just a head gasket...but if it is something more sinister...what are my options?

I am going to send it off to turner engineering once its off and get there opinion.

Quick troll through ebay shows some fairly dubious engines/heads of ether questionable linage or quality.

Similarly nobody has come forward with a cylinder head available so what do I do if it is dead?

What then? Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

If it was a 300 you'd probably be looking into major surgery. The 200s are pretty good for this sort of thing to be honest. Sending the head to turners is like using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut, find a local firm have a skim and a pressure test and go from there. If you're in deep DooDah with it, I've got a head here I can lend you if needs be. Good 200 heads to come about just got to be in the right place at the right time. Pull it to bits, I think you'll find that shes just popped a bit of gasket out, which they do with old age Thumbs Up

I've got a whole spare motor here but its done the best part of 400k so I'd be a bit dubious putting her to go again without a tear down and a set of shells Laughing
